Kedah says it is targeting to achieve around 15,000 km of road extension in the state by the end of this year. The total includes the upgrade of rural roads statewide, which will be registered under the Malaysian Road Records Information System (MARIS), Bernama reports.

According to Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, all related government departments and agencies have been instructed to identify roads that can be registered under MARIS in order to facilitate an allocation from the central government.

“Since two years ago, the district office and related agencies have been advised to register roads which meet the 2.4 metre-width requirement set by MARIS. With additional roads, total allocation will also increase and this will benefit contractors,” he told reporters.

The MARIS system utilised by JKR enables the department to know the length of roads in each state. According to 2010 statistics, 13,332 km of roads in Kedah have been registered under the system as of March this year.
