Renault Twingo GT – 110 hp, manual, rear-wheel drive

Despite saddling the Clio RS 200 hot hatch with a fun-sapping dual-clutch transmission, it seems that Renault can still heed the voice of the petrolhead. To that end, the guys at Renault Sport have taken the rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Twingo city car and stuffed it with a bunch of power and – rejoice! – a good ol’ manual gearbox to come up with the Renault Twingo GT.

The regular Twingo’s 898 cc TCe turbo three-pot – which makes 90 hp and 135 Nm of torque in standard form – has been boosted through a revised air intake system and modified engine mapping, so now it makes a dizzying 110 hp and 170 Nm. This should give the rumoured Volkswagen up! GTI a run for its money.

All this power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual, which gets revised gearing for improved acceleration. The suspension has also been retuned, while the stability control system has been given a calibration that is unique to the GT; variable-ratio steering has also been added.

Differentiating the GT from standard variants are the funky 17-inch wheels inspired by the mad Twin’Run Concept, plus side air intakes, twin exhaust exits and a unique Piment Orange colour. There’s also striping inspired by NACA air ducts, a lowered ride height, orange interior trim, Renault Sport-badged door sills, aluminium pedals and a zamak gear knob.
