Proton has issued a press release announcing that the new Proton Persona is now open for booking. The car will be officially launched next week on August 23. We know this already as the national carmaker recently posted an “open for booking” image on its Facebook page.
The booking fee is RM300, and the sum is refundable. A new bit of info is the Persona’s indicative price range – RM47,000 to RM61,000 in Peninsular Malaysia and from RM49,000 to RM63,000 in Sabah and Sarawak.
We’ve detailed the Persona’s specs, but here’s a recap. The “Iriz sedan” will be offered in three variants – Standard, Executive and Premium – with a Premium SE adding a dual-tone bodykit on top of the range topper. Active safety kit, including ABS with EBD and brake assist, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Hill Hold Assist (HHA) and Isofix child seat anchors, comes as standard across the range, just like the Iriz.
Kit count on the Standard variant includes dual airbags, grey 15-inch turbine design alloy wheels, power-adjustable side mirrors and a single-DIN Bluetooth-enabled radio. Move up to the Executive and one gains body-coloured side mirrors and door handles, front fog lights, a bootlid lip spoiler, a double-DIN head unit, USB charging ports and a 60:40 split-folding rear bench.
At the top of the range, the Premium gains six airbags, silver wheels, black B-pillar trim, power-folding side mirrors, keyless entry, push-button start, an Android-based touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and a reverse camera and leather upholstery.
Despite carrying the same wheelbase as the Iriz, the Persona feels bigger inside thanks to a scalloped front seat back and a more reclined rear seat; the boot is also a massive 510 litres. It’s around 20 kg lighter than the previous-generation model thanks to the use of high-tensile steel, but between 20 to 30 kg heavier than the Iriz depending on the spec.
All models are powered by the same 1.6 litre naturally-aspirated VVT engine as the Iriz, making 107 hp at 5,750 rpm and 150 Nm at 4,000 rpm. The Standard variant gets a choice of either a five-speed manual gearbox or a CVT; all other models are only available with the CVT.
Notable figures include a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 10.9 seconds with the manual, plus fuel consumption of 5.6 litres per 100 km with the manual and 6.1 litres per 100 km with the CVT. Do note, however, that these figures were taken at a constant speed of 90 km/h. An Eco Drive Assist indicator, which lights up when the car senses you’re driving economically, is fitted as standard.
Buyers can choose from six colours – Cotton White, Fire Red, Sterling Silver, Graphite Grey, Quartz Black and a new colour for the carmaker, Carnelian Brown, which is the hero colour for the second-gen Persona. Proton is offering three years free service (parts and labour included) for bookings made by September 30.

The given price point and range is good enough to Proton re-align their models line up. Fresher model should be prioritized to set up the price tag grouping. Don’t bothered by older version like N/A Preve.

What the hell r u talking abt? Used to drive Waja 1.6 the early sample for 2 years and it gives me nothing but heartache. Window mechanism had to be replaced TWICE, FC like crap and worse of all the gear switch FAILED several times – on bloody highway! Imagine driving at 110km/hr and suddenly the ‘box decided to drop to 3rd out of nowhere. F* HATED proton then but may have been abit mellow now – hence the reading.

The Persona in question is competing against Vios/Almera/City/Vento Etc. If segment is not important, then why would Proton bother to still produce the Saga ? Y manual fuel consumption is better than CVT?? Something must be wrong with the CVT. Most modern CVT and DCT provides better fuel consumption than even manual transmission.

Every cvt is less efficient than an mt. So at constant speed (90 kph) it is obvious that fuel efficiency is lower. In city driving with high shift frequency, a cvt is capable to optimise the engine efficiency much more than any stepped transmission can. Hence in city driving cvt cars will provide the better fuel efficiency. Same applies for the Punch CVT. Better know the complete story before judging.

Proton’s reputation is so bad now. How do you want people to put their hard earn money buying Proton Cars. Sure they have all the safety features but their sales is still so bad. People still buy japanese car which are not as well equipped because its reliable. Bash on perodua? their sales are sky rocketing. Sales figure shows everything.
Reputation of Proton is one thing. Proton’s main problem is model line-up. Saga old (new next month) Persona Old (new coming now), Preve nothing improved or even a facelift (4 years still waiting), Exora also never facelifted, just add Turbo and CVT (which is actually not bad). Satria Neo outdated. So if there are no new or exciting products for people to buy, of course public loose interest. Only Iriz is very good car, however slightly on the high on price, but design and feature as well as safety is very good. Compare Iriz and Myvi, Iriz is much better looking and driving wise so much better. Hopefuly the new models from Proton will be as good as the Iriz.
Japanese cars are reliable? Maybe in the past but not anymore. Open up your eyes and look around when you drive for broken down cars by the curb. I have seen several new T and H cars with their bonnets opened by the road side in the last few weeks.

Not bad, as far as design is concern I am impress actually. The only problem with the design (plague by every proton since the Exora) is the pitifully small wheel arches on such a large car, I mean the previous persona is one of the best proportion car to be built by proton.
But seriously the price might be a tad on the high side for a Proton and I don’t see the advantage of this against the similar and (personally) superior Iriz. I stressed before why is a point when a company is budget strapped. Why not streamline the model like what perodua did previously, just 3 very well thought out models to conquer the market.
these cars almost always sell below the showroom price…maybe if u r buyer for the first nits then ya , might pay the full price shown as theres a waiting period…after a while it gets the customary 3k-4k off the price….the Iriz as an example…it retails for around 60k for the 1.6 highest spec…but u can go to any showroom n get it for rm54k OTR now…..
pricing is fair , might not be as cheap as a proton should be , but the high spec is chock full of gadgets and safety features,its a reasonable price to pay….
p1 are always having products that overlap like no tmr , this will definitely eat into Iriz sales , as most prefer a boot…which begs the question , why was the iriz released in the first place!

Its not the wheel arch bro..its the undersized rims..just look at Iriz..change to bigger and wider wheels/rims and you have a winner..MY pipu wellknown faveret past time is to change rims..thats why P1 just use cheaper ones coz they know sure MY pipu will change right after come out from showroom..

No wonder la the tyres look small. Bagi la 60 or 65 profile like Vios or Almari. Kektop potong.
That size sounds rare too, should stick with Iriz’s more common 195/55/R15. Ok la, wanna go eco with narrower tyre, as said above, should give 60 or 65.
Or even narrower, City give 175/65/R15.

Hi Paul, I have been reading these new postings on Proton and have seen that many proton pro people here are usually for sure working for proton are here making comments and rest. it is good to see dynamic but I have found their language to be rude and very unhealthy and makes all people think what type of people run proton marketing and communication team. I personally will never comment again as I found some of the replies to be very rude and unprofessional.

I owned 3 cars. 09′ Persona SE, 15′ Iriz Premium and 14′ Honda City V. And i have never spend my time in tow truck or ulang alik SC when i drive my protons, i’m a heavy footer and i lenjan all my car and my protons still okay, no problem at all and the handling are far far better than my city. FC of course bad because i lenjan my car all the time, even my city hardly achieve 10km/l cause i drive like a maniac most of the time. And when i drive so sopan, jimat je takda pun makan minyak. I guess these people never drove one or just hear stories. Hahaha at least the persona came with active safety kit STANDARD across the range, even the basic vios and city doesn’t came with it. Oh and i can still woo girlfriend in my protons, no need my city.
People who need a car to woo a girlfriend.. Even if they drive Ferrari or Lambo also cannot woo a girlfriend la… Can only get girlfriend for a night. If you know what I mean. Or girlfriend for just 1 hour.
Horrible A Pillar design, look more like the Ford Fiesta Sedan model only thing the Fiesta look better than the this new model, Proton trying really hard, in fact to hard to design cars but forget the basics such as timeliness design and quality material for a 60K, it better have the works, DRL also don’t have but safety wise seems really good, but those wheel arch and small tires don’t go together. The interior also is quite bad, that gear knob design is horrible still….. The previous persona still looks way better than this new model both exterior and interior, they should have used the previous persona planform and redesign completely a new car for a timeless exterior look, good quality and best in safety ….this will at the very least make people overlook the engine and transmission which is also dated as hell and fuel consumption for sure will be the same as before until a new line of engines are produce by Proton. Pricing also is completely off and its all a recipe for failure, they really need to rethink the pricing again to at least stay competitive in the market. Vios facelift which I heard will come with ESC now for all variants, City, Kia Rio sedan, Hyundai Elantra and many others will still be the top choices even throughout they would be more expansive but their engines are way more fuel efficient, better quality and safety is up to par too. In fact I think the new Saga looking at the internet pictures looks like a better design compare to this new persona model but again if Proton gets the pricing right and will with safety features like this new persona or its closing shop time for Proton… Luck is no longer on your side, its make or break time Proton, lets see how well you do this round with these new persona and the saga. In all Proton should have also named a completely new models to show they are starting fresh and renewed focusing heavily on quality and safety being their top priority. Good Luck Proton on ur upcoming models !

Almera sucks, bought less than 1 year aircond compressor bocor!! First the tubing bocor then almost one year aircond compressor bocor. Seriously, wud rather buy preve than Almera. Being a japanese brand doesnt guarantee u anythin especially the CKD one. Almera sucks..the cheapest japanese sedan car but the worst quality…TC cut cost so many on almera. My personal n lots of Almera owner experience dat came to Nissan worksyop for repair.

Almari Nissan suffered of poor design of aircond system. very low cheap quality evaporator n cooling coil. just 1 year after usage got kondem. even SAGA Orian 30 years old stil tahan.

Apa yang teruk sangat kt proton tk tahula. Bagi saya proton okey je dan isu quality tu isu terpencil dah skrg. Yang masih bangkit isu power window tu rasanya tk patut ada dah. Semua kereta ada masalah. Tp proton takde la teruk mane . Ride and handling at the top. Peace no war.
pendapat saya plastic part/dashboard dlm persona nanti nampak spt sudah dipertingkatkan, kukuh dan padat spt kereta berjenama juga.. proton kali ni sudah matang dengan supplier baru dan vendor yg brtanggungjwb,, mereka pasti tak mau buat silap lagi..saya pasti masyarakat akan beralih kpd proton selepas ini…yakinlah ckp saya..buat penjual Toyota dan lain2 harap ikhlas berniaga dan bantu sesama kita bersaing secara sihat..jgn marah komen saya ni…nanti cepat tua..

As far as maintenance it’s still cheaper and affordable unlike the oriental cars,
And engine wise there are not much issue as they have improved the features and performance.

Both Perodua and Proton New Cars r attractive …. d differences r tat, the offer of Perodua Bezza is 1.00L/1.3L, whereas New Persona(High Specs., is 1.6L offered only(their attractive selling point is that they also have MORE seat Belts offered), and tat translates to Proton being a wee bit powerful, running at ‘wizadry’speed and oooomph, whereas Bezza at l.OOL, esp. its 1.3L(Advance)regenerative “Stop/Start’ at Stop-Look-Gos’ 1.3L shld consume less Petrol/be MORE frugal in our nowadays haphazard weak economy.. everybdy ‘copmplains’, bash down the HIGH ‘pontot’ stance of the New Perodua, which customers must know how to appreciate its 508 Litres of ample space for Balik Kampung” ease/// Then before putting yr name on new car one must know HOW reliable the parts of the car are/would be OVER time(!), like 4 example Power Windows, transmission quality reliability door latches, rust etc, etc! Lastly and very impoRtant/imperative, is for any potential BUYER to know the difference, the Advantage/Disadvantage of the Cars offered for sale here, namely the Belt-Timing Driven Proton New Persona and the Chain-Timing Driven New Bezza. Suffice to say Belt Timing Driven/Mechanism has been touted as having less parts(the car being lighter) and the running of the car being quieter BUT the drawback is that if one 4GETs to change the Belt Timing at a specific mileage….HABIS cerita (!) the car CAN NOT move at all, the Pistons are BASHEd & possibly all valves Bengkok(??!!)… on the other hand the ‘Old Fashioned’ Chain-Timing Driven Cars like the Mercedes, BMWs, Vios and the Almeras have been used/proven RELIABLE …ONLY drawback is that, at Old Age/High mileage the Timing Chain tends to emit a CLATTER-Like sound but car/s having Timing Chain will NOT break down/stalled, just DRIVE on jer to garage to change ……sorry if DON agree, only my 1/2 to 2 cent’ worth of opinion??!!
