2016 Mitsubishi Triton VGT brochure out – new 181 PS, 430 Nm 2.4 litre MIVEC turbodiesel, xenon headlights

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) has apparently begun handing out brochures of the updated 2016 Mitsubishi Triton VGT – reader Raja Rizal has sent us photos of the flyer he received from a roadshow in Penang, which details some of the changes coming to the pick-up truck.

Biggest change is the all-new Euro 5-compliant 2.4 litre MIVEC turbodiesel engine, replacing an updated version of the carryover 2.5 litre mill. The latter was used since the Triton’s launch last year, because our then-Euro 2M diesel quality was not ideal to be used with the new “Clean Diesel” engine – which was already offered on Thai-market at the time.

The change has likely been brought on because there is an increasing amount of stations in Malaysia now offering Euro 5 diesel. Outputs have swelled by 3 PS and 30 Nm to 181 PS and 430 Nm of torque, and improvements in refinement and fuel consumption have also been touted. The existing transmission options of either a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic are likely to soldier on.

The only other revision is minor, with the mid-spec VGT model getting the range-topping Adventure’s bi-xenon headlights to replace the current halogen reflectors. There are other changes coming to the Adventure too – spyshots have caught the car with the new Impulse Blue paint and elaborate 17-inch two-tone alloy wheels that were shown on the Triton Plus Special Edition at the Bangkok Motor Show this year.

It is unknown whether other changes that were incorporated in a running update in Thailand this year will be added to the Malaysian-market models. These include a tilt- and telescopic-adjustable steering wheel on all models, a second 12 V socket at the rear and a new four-spoke steering wheel from the Pajero Sport on higher-end GLS LTD models.

The range-topping Double Cab 4×4 GLS LTD 5AT also received the Pajero Sport’s Super Select 4WD II system, as well as seven airbags to go with the existing Active Stability and Traction Control offered.

Hopefully Mitsubishi Malaysia offers VSC and TRC, at least from mid-range double cab variants onwards, which the current variant lacks..

  • The new 2.4L engine is very advanced for a pickup truck, which should bring better power and economy than the ageing 2.5L. Unfortunately, it looks like MMM still won’t equip the Triton with AS+TC because there is no mention of the feature in the brochure.

This new engine might pair with an 8 speed auto gearbox just like the Pajero Sport from Indonesia. Now the golden question is: How much is this and what is the price difference between this and the Hilux ?

Anything with MIVEC Turbo or VTEC Turbo would make me feel upbeat. Still remembering and missing those Wiras and Satrias with MIVEC Turbo engine from yesteryears. Too powerful for its chassis.

Good to know we finally get the advance, and cleaner 2.4 diesel. The refreshed interior seemed appealing as well.

Triton is always a sensible choice if u want a rugged workhorse without too much electronics intefering your driving input. It relies on old school differential and mechanical setup to get the job done.

But where is the long overdue ESP?

if the new 2.4 MIVEC Diesel uses Euro 5 diesel fuel, then some states don’t have Euro 5 fuel how?

Looks good, and finally has the numbers to match… Uk reviewers consistently rate this as the best pickup compared to hilux, navara and the ranger in terms of driving and robustness…
Not sure about that 5speed auto.. Its the same old one… And feels like a stressed unit to cope with the high torque now.. Which makes it susceptible to premature wear…. Bt good effort…
I hope Mitsubishi only concentrate on their pickups.. Rather than garbage like Attrage and the dinosaur-age Apx and Lancer
