Tesla looks set to introduce a ride service programme similar to Uber in 2017, which was first hinted as part of the company CEO, Elon Musk’s “Master Plan, Part Deux” released back in July.
In a statement on the company’s site detailing its Autopilot system, the firm said “Please note that using a self-driving Tesla for car sharing and ride hailing for friends and family is fine, but doing so for revenue purposes will only be permissible on the Tesla Network, details of which will be released next year.”
With the Tesla Network, the company will be the first automaker to create and run its own ride-sharing service. According to the “Master Plan,” a Tesla owner could add his or her vehicle to a shared fleet using a phone app, allowing it to “generate income,” helping to lower the cost of ownership. Musk also adds that the service will operate in cities where demand was higher than supply due to lower levels of car ownership.
Tesla recently unveiled its next-generation full self-driving hardware (dubbed Autopilot 2.0), which allows its cars to offer Level 5 autonomy (fully autonomous driving with zero driver input required). Driverless taxis could be one of the features of the Tesla Network, but we’ll have to wait for further details.
