MRT one-month free ride period ends tomorrow – public advised to use cashless forms of payment

Beginning tomorrow (January 17, 2017), the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) Line Phase 1 will end its one-month free ride period, and Rapid Rail is encouraging commuters to use cashless forms of payment (Touch ‘n Go card, MRT weekly or month travel cards) for a better ride experience.

Commuters will still have the option of using cash to purchase travel tokens from ticket vending machines, although it will be cheaper should they go the cashless route. Those with MyRapid cards will only be able to use them when Phase 2 of the MRT (between Semantan and Kajang) opens in July later this year.

MRT fares for the Phase 1 operations are priced between RM1.20 and RM3.90 for cash payments, while cashless fares are between RM1.20 and RM3.40. On a related matter, MRT feeder bus services will cost RM1 per trip and payments are via Touch ‘n Go cards.

Students, senior citizens and those with disabilities will be given a 50% discount for both the MRT and feeder bus fares, and they can purchase the concession tokens from the customer services offices at any MRT station.

the low fare shows that MRT is not a money making machinery for the government, in fact its actually priced very fairly and i for one salutes the government decision in lowering the fare so more ppl will take the train, help save environment and lower the burden of rakyat

well done, and syabas to the government

    • They already made money from inflated MRT build cost.

And we’ll see in several years. Will MRT fare price be like highway tolls.

Inb4 BN troopers say don’t appreciate or give credit. DUH. That’s what we pay taxes for. And WTH will all the previous LRT lines that don’t even converge properly.

If you multiply 2 ways, it’s more expensive. That is his point. Sorry 2 say this. It should read “Its cheaper than parking fee…” without the ‘more’.

Keep it up! Efficient public transport will mean we will waste less time stuck in our cars and bikes during the morning and evening rush hours.

MRT in operation for free for 1 month. Absolutely no difference in traffic jam along LDP Bandar Utama area. Malaysians love the poshy lifestyle of driving their own cars.

The problem with the govt is that they think this can pay for itself. It cannot. It should be viewed as a public service, just like other services, like health, the police, military etc.
One thing that disturbs me is that no one knows the actual cost of this project.

    • Someone did know the total cost, but he was using sotong fortune teller to calculate the cost.

Why the discrimination against people who pay with cash? Not everyone who will use this has access to a bank account with a debit/credit card.

Cashless here refers to using Touch’nGo.

That’s still discrimination. Why does the cashless option have a discount? Why are people who may not have the money to spare for the TNG deposit being discriminated? Is this so that some crony gets more people to buy the TNG card? RM10.60 may be worthless to some people, but so many out there wouldn’t be able to spare that because of their situation.

People who pay with cash take up too much time and space in the station, similar to tolls.

  • On the one hand, they encourage cashless, such as T&Go, MRT card but on the other hand, students, senior citizens and those with disabilities will be given a 50% discount IF they purchase the concession tokens from the customer services offices at any MRT stations. Why can’t they stick to one rule like Singapore – issue a student, senior citizen etc MRT card lah…. this way people do not need to queue at the customer services office!
