2017 Perodua Axia facelift in showrooms, from RM25k

We now have a full gallery of the 2017 Perodua Axia facelift, as the updated model has made it way to selected showrooms and is open for test drives. So here it is, the most affordable vehicle in Malaysia, now enhanced since its initial release in 2014.

This being a mid-life facelift, the changes are minimal, but are more than skin deep. Under the bonnet, the 1KR-VE 1.0 litre three-cylinder engine now gains VVT-i variable valve timing, as introduced on the Bezza sedan last year. This addresses one of the more common complaints of the original Axia, as the Viva it succeeded did have variable valve timing (then badged DVVT).

Perodua Axia 1.0 Standard G facelift with GearUp bodykit

Outputs are up 1 hp and 1 Nm to 67 hp at 6,000 rpm and 91 Nm at 4,400 rpm, sent to the front wheels via the same five-speed manual and four-speed automatic gearbox options as before. Perodua claims a fuel consumption figure of up to 22.5 km per litre with the manual, up from the current car’s 21.6 km per litre and just a hair under the Bezza’s 22.6 km per litre figure with the 1.0 litre engine and manual gearbox.

On the visual front, Perodua has again gone for a two-face approach, with the Standard and SE/Advance models having unique looks. Now though, the Standard E and G get the pre-facelift SE/Advance model’s projector headlamps, paired with a redesigned front grille (with a silver bar) and bumper.

Standard G rear (left), Advance rear (right)

The side signal repeaters on the front fenders and 14-inch wheels (steel items on the Standard E, eight-spoke alloys on the Standard G) remain unchanged, however, along with the Standard’s rear bumper design and red taillights. A new addition is a tailgate handle, in place of an external keyhole on pre-facelift models. GearUp bodykit options are available, from RM1,600.

The more expensive and sportier-styled Axia SE and Advance models receive a more thorough makeover, with a brand new projector headlamp design, chrome two-bar grille and a Honda Jazz-esque front bumper. The foglamp housings now feature chrome highlights and faux carbon-fibre surrounds.

Round the side, the SE/Advance gets wing mirror-mounted LED signal repeaters (same as before), new “spiral design” 14-inch wheels from the Bezza Advance and chrome door handles with a keyless entry button on the driver’s side. The sharper rear bumper and clear rear lights go unchanged, but the tailgate handle gets a keyless entry button here too.

Changes inside are less obvious. All models now get Eco-drive Mode (including the base Standard E) and a revised instrument cluster design, with white illumination on the SE and Advance; the sportier models also receive a push start button (next to a new off switch for the front parking sensors).

The Advance, on the other hand, gains a new touchscreen infotainment system with “Smart Link” screen mirroring for Android phones (the SE retains a simple radio/CD head unit with Bluetooth, while the Standard G omits the CD player). Other changes include new fabric seat designs for Standard and SE models, as well as new grey (previously red) seat stitching and piping and steering wheel stitching on the Advance model.

There’s no change on the safety front – electronic stability control is still not available, but ABS is fitted on the Standard G and above; standard dual front airbags net a four-star ASEAN NCAP rating. Prices have been revised, now ranging from RM24,900 to RM42,900, with increases of as much as RM2,773 spec-by-spec. Refer to the table above for full details, along with the optional GearUp accessories.

What people want is ABS and VSC. The Axia does not have both. ABS safety was a legal requirement in Europe in the early 2003. Then, it was compulsory for all cars to have ABS.

This means, the Axia does not even have the basic safety requirement for cars established 15 years ago.

2ndly, no point doing facelift when your car got no VSC. Since 2005, every car in Europe and USA must have VSC compulsorily.

Malaysian Government already said, having VSC in Malaysia can prevent 45% of all deaths and accidents in a given year.

So if there are say 10,000 deaths in a year, if all cars had VSC, we can save 4500 lives

With this in mind, don’t you think it is better to give VSC and ABS to the rakyat then give a facelift?

Btw Perodua, the same car in Japan, a Daihatsu, got BOTH ABS and VSC.

How come Perodua take out ABS and VSC? Mahu untung lebih kah?

      • Starting this year, Axia G and above get ABS. But no VSC since it can’t be retrofitted. We’ll need an entirely new Axia replacement to have that

No VSC but harga sudah naik banyak.

Oh btw, what happened to the promise that car prices going to be reduced by 30%? Here, even national car also going higher in price.

Perodua is majority owned by UMW. So, Perodua belongs to the gomen. If gomen wants to reduce Perodua prices, they can if they want to to honour their 30% price reduction promise to the rakyat.

Malaysians are suffering now. Even a RM1000 hike to a poor man means a lot. Come on gomen, your leaders lead a luxurious life whilst the rakyat suffer.

Minyak also naik eventhough we are oil producing country.

One question we must ask is this. The original Daihatsu got VSC and ABS.
Why the car come to Malaysia the VSC and ABS is taken out? Are we the dumping ground for the Japanese to give us non safe cars when the Japs themselves sell the same car with VSC and ABS in Japan?

Or did Perodua aka UMW take out the VSC to untung more at the expense of our lives?

The same with the Toyota Passo. All got VSC. Why our Myvi got no VSC as standard?

man..i wish that daihatsu and toyota made the ayla/agya as good as the axia…in Indonesia, the ayla/agya has been long overdue for a facelift and they are not as well equipped as the axia you guys get over here…

on top of that we pay a much higher price than you guys despite the agya/ayla being given LCGC grants from the govt and we still dont get the VVT-i engine as well as some of the features like ABS & EBD and ISOFIX

    So much bashing in here.

But you guys realise that, at RM25k, this is a car that opens doors for more unfortunate people to upgrade from riding a bike to transporting their children in a car, away from rain and exposure?

One can take a loan for a brand new car at longer tenures, better rates, and avoid spending on repairs & maintenance upfront / in the short term compared to buying a 2nd hand car.

It opens doors for someone who has saved up RM1-2.5k for a downpayment and can spare only up to ~RM300 monthly for car instalments. Buying an old wira is still a RM5k+ cash affair and potentially requires many visits to the workshop and more upfront $$.

Throw in ABS, EBD, VSC, etc etc and it wouldnt be RM25k. Not in this country. Unfortunately cars in Malaysia are expensive and we have no choice but to deal with it.

But for this, I say bravo, Perodua. For putting on the roads a basic vehicle for the more unfortunate. Im sure every car manufacturer wants to make better, more beautiful, more classy cars instead of such a basic vehicle, but lives are be changed because of this.

And before anyone says why want to make so much money, greed, etc, etc, companies HAVE to make money! How is a company going to expand, improve, and make better products without any profits? You would be making kancils forever if you had no profits to re-invest.

P2 could’ve rerouted the resources spent on bumpers, chromes and shit, and made sure everyone gets VSC.

But they didn’t, so no brownie points for that.

    1) it’s the cheapest $$$ can buy.
    2) cheaper 2 maintain.
    3) very reliable small car
    4) cheaper 2 insure
    5) good RV.
