Highway concessionaires instructed to provide dedicated motorcycle shelters along highways

All Malaysian highway concessionaires have been instructed to provide motorcycle shelters along highways under their area of responsibility. This instruction comes from the Public Works department (JKR) citing concern over the safety of motorcyclists taking shelter under fly-overs and bridges when it rains.

According to JKR, such shelters are necessary as stopping by the roadside under bridges to avoid inclement weather is unsafe, Bernama reports. In a statement, JKR stated the design of such shelters should place emphasis on the safety of motorcyclists, and should incorporate all necessary safety elements.

In addition, JKR believes special motorcycle lanes should also be built along highways, considering the increasing number of fatalities involving motorcyclists along highways. Such safety measures will include guide lines for motorcycles, as well as the amenities and design for motorcycle lanes.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian highway authority has proposed that the building of dedicated motorcycle shelters along highways should be made compulsory and part of the conditions of the concession agreement.

Pity the bikers. Pay money also they not given shelter.

Sounds like the car users also. Pay money but road uneven and full of potholes. Accident also we cannot sue anybody cause the concessionaire is a GLC.

Our highways only highway in the world that is paid but in complete darkness ie no lights at all at night.

      Other countries all got lights.

  • Motorcycles should not be not highways without dedicated lanes in the first place. Lane splitting and hogging outer lanes are so dangerous.

In Taiwan, small bike or high power bike cannot use in highway. Small bike below 250cc can use normal city road or expressway that provide bike lane, same as bike with more 250cc. One benefit / optional for >250cc bike, can use car lane but need to follow car driving behavior. Biker cannot ride center line between car, cannot ride like ular… Potong sana sini. Also plate must visible!!

Motorcycles big or small should only stick on the left lane and not in the middle or right lane. It is very dangerous if they get hit because they are vulnerable and can’t be seen from far because of its small size or poor visibility at night.

Very good move to improve safety. However, something should be done about the reckless & dangerous riding behaviour. Cub zhai zig zag in and out of lanes. Big bikes ride like they own the road and as if they’re still driving a car. Bikes are supposed to keep left on the inner most left lane. That is in the written undang undang test.

Special bike lane, motorcycle shelters and necessary safety elements will lead to charging tolls from motorcycles. Nothing is free, mate.

    • Maybe, but motorcyclist wud appreciate the convenience and safety of riding separately.
