Audi has officially confirmed its Q model line-up will be expanded to include two new introductions – the Q8 premium SUV and Q4 compact SUV. Currently, the range includes the Q2, Q3, Q5 and Q7.
“We will integrate two completely new Q models into the existing production network and will thus increase our competitiveness in an extremely important segment,” stated Hubert Waltl, board of management member for production and logistics at Audi.
Focusing on the Q8 first, Audi says the SUV will feature coupe styling, which was previewed by the Q8 sport concept in Geneva this year. Despite its shape, the SUV is claimed to offer “great spaciousness” as well as the latest technologies in assistance and infotainment systems.
No word on what will power the big Audi, although a 3.0 litre TFSI six-cylinder turbocharged engine could be a possibility if the concept is any indication. The mill on the preview vehicle also features an electric-powered compressor and an effective mild hybrid system for recuperation.
As for the Q4, the new model will mark Audi’s entry into the compact SUV segment, positioned between the Q3 and Q5. Like the Q8, it too will feature a coupe-styled silhouette but beyond that, there are no further details about it. Audi’s TT Offroad Concept from the 2014 Beijing Auto Show certainly looks like a worthy preview of such a model, a coupe on stilts fits Audi’s description, don’t you think?
In any case, production of the Q4 will kick off in 2019 at Audi Hungaria in Gyor. Meanwhile, the Q8 will be produced at the carmaker’s Bratislava plant from 2018, joining the Q7, which has been in production at the Slovakian plant since 2005.
