We’ve been aware of this for some time, but now it’s official – Volvo Car Malaysia has announced the opening of order books for the S90 T8 Twin Engine. The most powerful plug-in hybrid version of Gothenburg’s flagship sedan will be offered in range-topping Inscription trim, matching the XC90.
As such, the car will have higher level of specification compared to the existing T5 Momentum and T6 AWD R-Design variants. Locally assembled (CKD) in Shah Alam to take advantage of Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV) incentives, the S90 T8 will retail at an introductory price of RM348,888 on-the-road without insurance.
That’s a massive RM40,000 cheaper than even the base T5 and a whole RM105,000 less than the T6, although both these models are fully imported (CBU). Included in the price is Volvo’s usual five-year/120,000 km warranty. It should be noted, however, that the early-bird pricing will only be available for orders confirmed before October 31, according to local dealers.
At its heart lies the same engine as the T6 – a 2.0 litre Drive-E four-cylinder engine that’s both turbocharged and supercharged to improve low-end response and boost outputs to 320 hp at 5,700 rpm and 400 Nm between 2,200 and 5,400 rpm. All that is sent to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Paired to this powertrain is an 87 hp/240 Nm rear-mounted electric motor that provides the car with all-wheel drive; there’s also a crankshaft-mounted starter generator (CISG) sandwiched between the engine and gearbox to assist in acceleration from a standstill or low speeds.
Total system output is rated at 407 hp and 640 Nm, propelling the S90 T8 from zero to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. The car is also capable of a combined fuel consumption figure of 2.0 litres per 100 km, carbon dioxide emissions of 46 grammes per kilometre and an all-electric range of 50 km on the European NEDC cycle.
Given the higher trim level, expect the T8 to mirror the XC90’s equipment count and come with a few bits of kit that were excluded from the current CBU models – including four-zone automatic climate control (up from two-zone) and Apple CarPlay connectivity. Volvo’s full suite of Intellisafe driver assistance systems and Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving features should also be offered as standard, as they are now.
