Announcement on toll concessions next week, says Zeti from the Council of Eminent Persons – report

The Council of Eminent Persons is expected to make an announcement with regards to toll concessions nationwide next week, said member Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz, as reported by Malay Mail.

The former Bank Negara governor was met after a series of briefings and a meeting today, and she said the council was in the midst of engaging all stakeholders and working hard to find a feasible solution. “The decision will be made very quickly because they (the stakeholders) are supposed to come back to us next week. Work is very, very intense now.

“All of us are very committed to come up with a solution that is in the best interest of all Malaysians who are looking forward to things that are so much better. We hope we can make that happen,” Zeti told reporters.

Besides Zeti, the other members in the “Council of Elders” are former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, former president and CEO of Petronas Tan Sri Hassan Marican, Hong Kong-based tycoon Tan Sri Robert Kuok and economist Professor Jomo Kwame Sundaram. The gradual abolishment of tolls was mentioned in Pakatan Harapan’s GE14 manifesto.

      The solution is really simple:

      1. Abolish tolls doesn’t mean loss of income entirely for govt. It’s the opposite actually.

      2. Basically the toll money forgo is the money saved to the rakyat, which means either more spending power to you or more savings.

      3. That same money spent again into economy, govt enjoy more taxes from bigger business profits, which again used for the highway maintenance.

      4. The fear of EPF as highway co-owner might lose future income is also unfounded as EPF can switch to buy shares more on those consumer based bluechip stocks perhaps with similar dividend streams also.

      5. Nothing really lost. It’s just the same money returned, saved, spent, recirculate into economy again. Same principle applied to GST 0% as well. The whole economy being pumped up by more consumer spendings. Things can fix by itself with proper logic and planning, that’s all!

in city make it rm1 in any 1way.
on long distance rm0.20 per km.
and if the number of car increase let say hari raya.. reduce it further because many car used same km are sharing maintenance burden of the road.

  • Hope the solution is fair to both the toll operators and users. Let’s wish Pakatan govt, through the establishment of truly expert groups to get this and other things done properly and fairly for the rakyat. This is both a great challenge and opportunity for the new govt to correct the wrongs of the past.

  • Gov should make up their mind.

If government wanna return to old fuel subsidy and reduce toll rate, it will hinder public transport progress that have been made under Najib. If this is really the way to go, then might as well halt MRT2, and cancel MRT3 and penang LRT. These 3 project alone costs more than RM100 billion. If want to continue these projects, please do it seriously.

If they wanna go for public transport, just continue current policy or even increase fuel and parking lot rate to force people taking public transport.

We cant have both. There’s no place on earth where cheap fuel and high usage of public transport coexists.

Sadly, we’re heading back to dinosaur era where traffic snarl will be a daily routine and taxis will take full advantage of poor customers. We can now forget about good connectivity and efficient public transport or e-hailing services in order to get short term gains without thinking about the future.

What a stupid statement like amad maslam. If we have good public transport and cheap petrol & tolls, we have alternative. If traffic jam is so bad, we can take public transport. If we want to go somewhere with our family, it is easier using car. This old government mindset need to change. For sure new government make deep analysis before make the manifesto. They have much more experience ruling the country.

The agreement with plus concession should ended this year.. Pakatan will abolish toll PLUS.. Pakatan will take over the maintained cost.. Only abolish PLUS expressway.. Other highways will abolish when ‘tarikh konsesi tamat’..

When the agreements end, Pakatan can and should take over all the tolls.
Absolutely free lunch or absolutely free dinner are non-sense.
      Everythingss have to be adil.

And, please abolish BR1M. Majukan negara, majukan rakyat.

Ianya akan jadi jalan persekutuan.. PH will stop BR1M after next year when the time is right after make deep analysis.. Malaysia Ku maju

I don’t think abolishment is bad. Government can propose a sum needed for yearly road maintenance and then spread the cost with all motorist via higher tier based road tax. When everyone is sharing the cost, it will be less burden on the government finances. If you think about how much these consessions are making each year, the road maintenance isn’t costing that much really. When every road become public road, it will also help with the traffic diversion as motorists do not have to worry about paying multiple tolls to avoid congestions. Nor do they have to make illegal turns which causes traffic jams just to avoid paying tolls.

I know some might oppose this saying I don’t need really travel that much etc but in the long term, it will also translate into savings for transportation companies which also mean lower cost for businesses to ship their products across Peninsular or Borneo. Lower transportation cost might even translate into cheaper price for items that we bought.

Of course this is just my personal opinion and gov should study it in detail to see if it’s feasible.

I really hope that PH Govt will continue with the Pan Borneo Highway, regardless whether they want to rebrand it other names or not.

Our Sabah and Sarawak brothers deserved good infrastructure and connectivity too.

Goverment should not abolish road tolls. Goverment should buy back Plushighway and then sell it to EPF for 1/5 of cost. EPF to have concession of 999years. We then can truly says it as “by the rakyat and for the rakyat”. Same for water concession etc etc etc. EPF should play a bigger role in ownership of good assets as one way to spread wealth. Any IPO our EPF should be given 1st preference to buy from 5% to up to 20% of new shares issued. I would like to declare I do not own even a single share in any entity given road toll concession or water supply concession. Nor I am under their employment.
