SPYSHOTS: G20 BMW 3 Series – non-M Sport this time

Word is that the next-generation BMW 3 Series, codenamed G20, will make its debut later this year at the Paris Motor Show in October. That’s no big surprise, as production-ready test mules have been spotted testing in Germany.

We had a decent look at a G20 test mule earlier this month, which also revealed the premium compact exec’s interior. While that car was an M Sport beneath the camouflage, this set of spyshots are of a regular trim level, with smaller wheels (Hankook to be the OE tyre?) and a less aggressive front bumper.

The level of disguise is similar to before, covering the entire car except for the roof and a small section of the bonnet, even if the new grid patterned camo is less distracting. But with no padding, the shapes and lines of the new 3 Series are clear, and it’s no big departure from today’s car – evolution is the name of the game for successful icons.

In front, the kidney grille appears larger and rounder than the F30’s, and we get a sneak peek at the new car’s headlamps. There’s a radar sitting in the lower intake for driver assist systems. At the back there’s a shapely boot lid and chrome-tipped dual exhaust pipes, but BMW gives little else away. The location of the reflectors are lower here than on the M Sport bumper, which also has vertical vents at the edges.

The interior will be a bigger change, as spied previously. Spotted items include a digital instrument panel with fixed half rings, like in the G30 5 Series, and a slim centre stack that might share a same style with the upcoming Z4 roadster. The centre console is a huge departure from the current layout – it houses the push start button and a new, more flush iDrive controller.

Here’s how we think the next-gen BMW 3 Series will look like.

I don’t think BMW Malaysia will end that programme since it is one of the main reasons people choose BMW over other premium brands, especially those buyers upgrading from lower segments.

        • Tight budget buyer normally will go for Mercedes because of low maintainance cost and better resale value. We won’t go wrong with uncle.

Doesn’t look too much different even though supposed to be all new. Good for current owners.

In my opinion, the overall shape still looks a lot like the F30. With notable exception of the flared rear arches (a nice touch to accentuate RWD proportions) and front axle that has been pushed forward ever so slightly. It’s probably the details that will differentiate it further from the F30.
