Lewis Hamilton will remain with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport Formula 1 team for a further two years after agreeing to a contract extension. The Brit will remain a Silver Arrows driver until the end of 2020, by which time he’ll have spent eight years with Mercedes, his longest period with a single team in the sport.
Since joining Mercedes in 2013, Hamilton has secured three world drivers’ championships and 44 Grand Prix wins with the team. Prior to joining his current outfit, Hamilton made his debut with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, where he won 21 Grand Prix races and took home the championship in 2008.
As the team names suggest, Mercedes engines have powered every single Grand Prix that Hamilton has been a part of. Overall, his 65 F1 wins places him second on the all-time list behind Michael Schumacher (91 wins).
“This contract extension has basically been a formality since Toto and I sat down during the winter, so it’s good to put pen to paper, announce it and then get on with business as usual. I have been part of the Mercedes racing family for 20 years and I have never been happier inside a team than I am right now. We are on the same wavelength both on and off track – and I am looking forward to winning more in the future and shining even more light on the three-pointed star,” said Lewis Hamilton.
“We have been aligned with Lewis ever since we first sat down to discuss the details of this contract after last season, but there has understandably been a lot of interest and speculation around the whole process, so it’s good to put all of that to rest and get this thing announced. We signed the final documents this week and didn’t want to keep people waiting any longer! There is not much about Lewis as a Formula One driver that hasn’t been said already – he is one of the all-time greats and his track record speaks for itself,” added team principal and CEO Toto Wolff.

Drivers must be promoted based on merit like Hafizh in MotoGP, not cuz Bapak says must have driver there, deswai put unqualified AY in F1.

He was abject failure in F1. He shud have went straight to LMS instead of rushing to F1 but finding he was too selow to qualify most of the time. Guess who was his racemates then? Fernando Alonso & Mark Webber. How did he compared to those 2, hmm?
I do agree with john wholeheartedly. They should only be assisted to go up if they show their potential for it, Motor racing is one good example, almost all categories having a Malaysian rider. Too bad Zulfahmi Khairuddin dropped out of Moto2 but he knew that he wasn’t capable for it, and that’s what Alex should have done back when in F1.
