VIDEO: 2017 Yamaha YZF-R1M – road-going race bike

It is indeed unfortunate that Hong Leong Yamaha Malaysia is not offering the 2017 Yamaha YZF-R1M, or for that matter, the more mundane YZF-R1, for sale locally. Chock-full of race goodies, the YZF-R1M is a showcase of Yamaha’s racing and engineering prowess.

The Crossplane 4 engine, displacing 998 cc, comes with forged pistons and titanium con-rods on the inside, and magnesium bits on the outside, along with a titanium full-system exhaust. Now, who says you can’t have nice things?

Technological wizardry extends to the Ohlins electronic suspension, practically the same stuff used by the MotoGP and WSBK boys, save some internals and track specific programming. Clad in carbon-fibre – we tried asking the price for a replacement and were only told, “very expensive” – the R1M is indeed, a racer’s wet dream.

Inside the cockpit, the colour TFT-LCD panel even includes a braking force sensor, and displays settings for everything, from suspension settings to ABS levels to traction control. Naturally, the performance comes at a price and that price is fuel consumption.

On the whole, as a single focus road-going race bike, the YZF-R1M has it all and then some. If you’re one of the lucky few in this country to own one as grey import, or ridden one on review, as we have, consider it a very special experience.

Both very accomplished racing bikes. Malaysian bikers are indeed very lucky to enjoy installment periods up to 84 months.

Bro Mohan, I’m jealous that U get “a racer’s wet dream” with the mighty Yamaha YZFR1. Must be nice feeling like Valentino Rossi riding his VR46 GP bike !! He he he. Cheers…
