G20 BMW 3 Series teased again before Paris premiere

It won’t be long before we set our eyes on the all-new G20 BMW 3 Series but before that, the German automaker is ensuring we continue to receive a consistent flow of obligatory teasers. Here are three new images of the final product, which is believed to be the 3er in range-topping M340i guise.

A shot of the car’s left-front wheel suggests this to be true, given the look of the brake caliper that sports the trademark BMW M logo. From this angle, we also see another M badge on the fender, with a sharp crease further downwards.

The pointed end of the headlamps can also be seen, which is a cue also found in BMW’s video focusing on the start of 3 Series production. Black-painted trim in the corners of the front bumper could be a styling element unique to the M Performance variant.

In another image, purists will be upset to discover that the Hofmeister kink has been replaced with a more angular design instead. The new 3 Series will continue to feature small lip spoiler that is part of the boot lid’s shape, like on the outgoing F30 model.

As for the rest of the car, we already know from spyshots and previous teasers that a large double kidney grille, dual exhausts and L-shaped graphics for the lighting elements are to be expected. The use of the modular Cluster Architecture (CLAR) also sees a revision to the model’s dimensions, but without the expense of added weight.

The third image partially shows the car’s interior, where we see a M steering wheel, door panel switchgear and part of a digital instrument cluster. We’ve already seen the last item in the latest G05 X5, which also comes with the latest iteration of the iDrive system and OS 7.0 (BMW calls this dual 12.3-inch screen combo the Live Cockpit). BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant will also be present, as the company revealed in the past.

Based on previous spyshots, the X5’s climate control and media buttons, iDrive controller and gear lever should be present in the new 3er as well. Of course, we can only confirm this when the model makes its full debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show.

On the topic of engines, the M340i should pack a B58 3.0 litre turbocharged straight-six petrol engine, with lower variants like the 330i receiving a 2.0 litre turbo four-cylinder instead. Diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains are to be expected too, albeit released at different times.

The design direction of mainstream cars are so predictable that it is on the verge of being boring and lazy. Yes, they want to place it safe to continue to capture their market share. But what about us the consumers? Sometimes I honestly feel like they are shortchanging the buyers.

Wow. No kink? I’m already reconsidering just because of this and I haven’t even seen the car! I have a feeling this will be a single-generation thing – possibly the one to skip.
