Bill to ease the cancellation of vehicle registration, removal of abandoned cars passed in Parliament

The Dewan Rakyat has passed the Road Transport (Amendment) Bill 2018, which will ease the cancellation process of vehicle registration. This will in turn facilitate the disposal of abandoned vehicles by local authorities, Bernama reports.

Deputy transport minister Datuk Kamaruddin Jaffar said that based on available records, there are 27.4 million registered vehicles in the country, and from that total, 9.7 million units are believed to be no longer active as their road tax have not been renewed.

Kamaruddin added that his ministry would be cooperating with the housing and local government ministry, as well as local councils to streamline the standard operating procedure (SOP) currently used to dispose abandoned vehicles.

“The ministry will be reviewing the time taken to process damaged vehicles to expedite the disposal of the vehicles, so as not to pollute the environment, and the disposal is only carried out at registered disposal centres as well as compliance to disposal process to protect the environment,” he said.

Yesterday, transport minister Anthony Loke said local councils have been facing difficulties in disposing abandoned vehicles in their areas, as most of them still have valid registrations. With the amendments, nine city mayors will be able to authorise the removal of abandoned vehicles parked on public roads.

Besides the disposal of abandoned vehicles, revisions to the act will also see JPJ be allowed to deregister cars with tampered chassis numbers. The department will also be responsible for regulating and collecting fees for the approval of vehicle window tinting above the allowed limits – more on that one here.

Lucky the new Government is doing something good. There are an estimated 1 million abandoned vehicles in Malaysia. And they are the No 1 cause of denggi and aedes. Go and see abandoned vehicles, you can always see larvae inside.

Amazing the work of Loke and his team. What Loke has done in 6 months is equivalent to other people working in 20 years.

Bravo Loke! Bravo Loke! You know hard work pays!

Half of the 9.7m still on the road without insurance coverage and road tax. Plus some in FELDA and Kelantan villages. The local authority can make some money by salvaging part for resale and not forgetting the recyclable steel.
