The Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ have been around since 2012, and with the introduction of the new A90 Supra, many are wondering if the sports cars will be redesigned for another generation.
A report from Japanese Nostalgic Car, quoting an unpublished issue of Japanese magazine Best Car, suggests the end of the road for the Toyobaru twins, as both car companies have decided on different development policies.
It also doesn’t help that the new Supra will be offered with a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine in Japan (197 PS and 320 Nm), which effectively closes the gap to the 86/BRZ.
This new development counters an earlier report that suggests a new generation of the Toyobaru twins will debut in 2021. Of course, barring any official word from either carmaker, we’ll have to take these claims with a grain of salt for now.
Despite this, the Toyota/Subaru partnership isn’t completely dead as rumours of a revived MR2 with Subaru tech have been surfacing lately. Subaru has previously denied claims that it is developing a mid-engined sports car as a BRZ replacement.
Looking to sell your car? Sell it with Carro.
Habisla Toyota!
Poor Subaru line up left with sedan hatch station wagon and crossovers… no more sports car…
Next to bin will be boxer engines…will not passed strict euro7
Subaru has survived all along without a sports car ……
Unless you count the 2 door Impreza GM and the heavy weight SVX..(really GREAT car btw) which is more GT then sports car? There were no sports car in Subaru’s lineup until the BRZ.
Thier bread and butter that saved them when everyone else got the short end of the stick was the outback models.
They should have just prodrive to get a lotus Elise chassis and shoehorn an EJ20 turbo inside. That’d be something.
On that note, since Toyota has been supplying engines to the Elise for donkey years, why not co develop the MR2 together with lotus???
Wha? Then their Japanese supporter here will get an ultimate butthurt. Edi he got one up the rear when news broke of Toyota partnering with Geely.
it looks fantastic on the road tho, eveb at 7 years old
Because BRZ didn’t get the sales numbers as Subaru had hoped for, and Toyota will just simply rebadge another automaker’s sportscar (MX-5, most likely).
That will help with rarity of this model. Next thing u know, value of car will maintain.
