Around 2,100 taxis operating at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) are set to be equipped with in-car Smart AI monitoring equipment by the end of this year, Bernama reports.
The system – which consists of an app, high-definition cameras, speakers and panic buttons – is aimed at improving the quality of taxi services, said Petekma president Syahrir Abdul Aziz. It will monitor and record the movements of taxi drivers, and will be connected directly to a control centre, which will intervene if something untoward happens.
“Drivers will be closely monitored as the focus will be on their driving and they should not flout the rules by smoking or quarrelling with passengers. Should the situation reach a dangerous level, the control centre will warn them about action that can be taken. It can even stop the vehicle if the situation worsens,“ he said.
“As for passengers, Smart AI will ensure they are protected from untoward incidents where they are asked to pay extra fares, harrassed or scolded by drivers during the trip,“ he said.
Mohd Syahrir said that the operation of the new system will begin with 300 taxis, with installation for the rest being carried out in stages. He said that the initiative – which will be jointly handled by the Taxi Drivers, Limousine and Car Rental Operators Association (Petekma) and equipment supplier Teguh Tunggal – will not see an increase in airport taxi fares, as the government’s fixed taxi fares will be maintained.
The current KLIA to Kuala Lumpur fare for a budget taxi is RM83, while the premium taxi fare is RM118 and the rate for a luxury and family taxi is RM233.

Hihihi…
What a waste, someone must ‘benifit’ from this project. A proven way with app like what existing ride hailing uses is good enough as the key hardware belongs to the customer (the mobile phone). Adding more hardware just add unnecessary cost and maintenance.
300 taxis as pilot project, who will monitor?
Even if u put 30 people in the control room they wont be able to cope durig peak hours.
The fares are too expensive! Reduce by 50%.
Also, the taxis are smelly and sometimes no seat belts at the back.
Please remember that the rakyat are afraid of them…
An airport is a main gateway from the world and to the world.
Tourist first impression upon arrival are very important. Malaysia greet them with an old Taxi, bad service and speeding driver. This does not reflect to advancement of the country. You may have the first class infrastructure but low class service industry.
For instance.
Bangkok Airport: a brand new Toyota altis is minimal for the Airport taxi.
Jakarta: Toyota Vios as minimal for the Airport Taxi
Ho Chi Minh: Toyota Innova as minimal for Airport Taxi
Manila: Toyota Vios as minimal for Airport Taxi
Singapore: Hyundai i40, and various D segement sedan as Airport Taxi.
We yet to compare to other country.
What about our country?
A cramped Proton Saga or aged generation 1 Proton Persona with NGV tank that not suitable for baggage? Are you serious? for the airport use?
I suggest to change all Airport Taxi to min. Proton Preve or Proton Exora. No more B sgement car with a big NGV tank behind if we want to maintain National car as the primary mode.
Hahahaha, another day another scheme (oops, scam).
Anyone remember that supposedly GPS tracking hump on KLIA Perdana V6 Limo (back when KLIA was opened)? Turned out to be just big talk but zero substance.
Why bother taking this taxis….there are e-hailing services to choose such as grab or mycar with way better services & cars. Been ages since i last took a taxi ride…
