Next-gen D92A Toyota Vios will reportedly debut in Q3 2022 – DNGA platform; petrol engine first, hybrid later

The current, third-generation Toyota Vios has been around for a while now, receiving numerous updates since its initial introduction in 2013 to become what it is today. A staple in the B-segment sedan space, the Vios is certainly due for full model change, and based on a report by Philippine automotive portal AutoIndustriya.com, this will happen next year.

According to the publication, the next-generation Vios is due to make its debut in August 2022 in Thailand, where the model is marketed as the Yaris Ativ. Unlike its predecessor, the new model is said to use the internal code D92A, which marks a departure from the “XP” code used on previous generations such as the first-gen XP40, second-gen XP90 and third-gen XP150.

The new internal code is significant, as it suggests that Toyota will use the Daihatsu New Global Architecture for the Vios, which as the name suggests, is the Daihatsu counterpart to the Toyota New Global Architecture.

Next-gen D92A Toyota Vios will reportedly debut in Q3 2022 – DNGA platform; petrol engine first, hybrid later

The DNGA platform is something that we’re already familiar with, as it underpins the Perodua Ativa in Malaysia as well as other Daihatsu products. It should be noted that Perodua also uses “D” when naming its projects that are supported by Daihatsu, as the Ativa is known internally as the D55L, while other examples include D38L (Aruz), D20N (Myvi), D87A (Axia) and D63D (Bezza).

By using DNGA, the all-new Vios will be able to benefit from improvements that the platform brings, including weight savings, enhanced rigidity and improved safety. It’s also claimed that there will be a hybrid version of the Vios that will arrive in August 2023, which is certainly possible because the platform does have provisions for electrification. The Rocky, a DNGA-based SUV that is the basis for the Ativa, is rumoured to get a hybrid variant later this year.

Officially, Toyota has not indicated if an all-new Vios is on the way, but should it happen, expect the model to be locally assembled in Malaysia to keep pricing competitive against its main rival, the Honda City, which entered a new generation near the end of 2019 and was launched here last year.

  • Right now, DNGA Raize Ativa > Vios Hatchback/Sedan AEB BSM, also better than City.
But DNGA Vios is coming, well done.

      • At Japan, Toyota Raize sell better TNGA Yaris hatchback of the Same price, despite it having Dynamic Force and Hybrid version.

So, TYT DNGA Raize is very good too.

Combined, Yaris hatchback + Yaris Cross SUV, then sales only can be better than DNGA Raize, at Japan.

        Quite true, actually.

At Japan, Toyota Raize (ativa) is no.1 best selling car, tapau TNGA Yaris.
Until TNGA Yaris Cross launched, combined figure as Yaris then only overtake Raize.

Even the 2021 JDM better interior Honda Jazz also out of Top 10 Japanese car sales chart.

        • But yet, Toyota Raize are still selling well. Also because of technology that uses DNGA Platform which is part of cheaper of TNGA Platform, interior looks more advanced and looks getting sleeker

          • DNGA platform is not even rubbish car. DNGA platform is actually advanced platform but cheaper and reducing cost for developing and launching smaller budget new toyota/daihatsu models, together also come with advanced technologies (according from Daihatsu mentioned). Like if you look at interior for Toyota Raize, it comes with bigger details.

        • DNGA platform is also one of the part of TNGA platform and also shares the same modular concept as TNGA. But DNGA platform is only developed for budget smaller cars and while to me, TNGA platform is only main for advanced smaller cars, higher end cars and mid-size cars. That’s why using DNGA platform to make next gen vios and yaris, not only more cheaper but also reducing the cost incurred in developing for smaller toyota/daihatsu cars compare to TNGA platform.

Since the new one share the same platform as the Ativa, it make sense to OEM Vios production in Rawang. The same can be said in Rush Aruz production in Malaysia.

All new cars’ headlamp are becoming “mata sepet” and stretched.

In 10 years time, theese lamps will be stretched till the centre of the front door.

Vios wheelbase have not budged even by 1mm more ever since launched in 2003. It is the same bloody chassis, don’t be fooled by the constant changes of body panels with every “new model”, it is just surface appearance only. Everything else is ancient.

Whether the chassis is 20 years old or 14 years old, it’s still good to go. Want to compare? VW Vento 1.6 is using Beetle 1.6 (1998) engine – 22 years and Proton Campro engine have been available since 2000 – 21 years & still going.

Engine is different la. Engine got nothing to do with body rigidity and HPF steel to protect ur lives. This 20 year old car has ZERO (read again: ZERO!) HPF so dont expect to live thru a bad accident. Better to buy more insurance if you expect sit inside one of these deathtraps.

If you give DNGA Raize a car boot and lowered it, but still has 205R17.
It’s a champ. And its still larger than any old Vios.

If not, it’s not even better than DNGA SUV.
It’s just a n00b vios like the new city.

This car deserves all the flak it gets, and more, simply for being an old car that keeps getting refresh every new model but still using the same underpinnings. City otoh went from 4th gen to current 7th gen and each one is built on new platforms. Each iteration getting more high teach & kit. So how do you define Vios is better equipped when it got nothing with to compare against hybrid powertrain on City RS spec?
