In this post, we’re focusing on Volkswagen and the one and only Golf GTI. It sounds cliched but it’s true – this pioneering hot hatch needs no introduction because, well, if there was no Golf GTI, there would be no hot hatchbacks today. Now in its eight generation, the hot Golf once again matches quality, practicality and performance like no other. Now served with plenty of tech, too.
There’s nothing familiar about the Mk8 Golf’s cockpit. Beside the 10.25-inch digital instrument panel is a 10-inch Discover Media touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The only knob you’ll find is for the wing mirrors; even the “gear knob” is nothing more than a tiny protrusion on the sloping centre console.
GTI-specific kit include leather sport seats (automatic with lumbar and memory for the driver), special GTI red gauges, red trim and GTI logo on the steering wheel (with shift paddles), red piping and stitching on the grey-black seats and honeycomb trim on the dashboard. Outside, you get the trademark red strip on the grille and a honeycomb mesh for the lower grille, twin exhaust pipes and 18-inch Richmond alloys.
Performance wise, the 2.0 TSI engine serves up 245 PS and 370 Nm of torque from 1,600 to 4,300 rpm. That’s an increase of 15 PS/20 Nm from the Mk7.5 GTI, and on par with the Performance Pack version of that car. Paired to a seven-speed DSG (wet) dual-clutch transmission, 0-100 km/h happens in a brisk 6.4 seconds and top speed is 250 km/h.
For the first time, the Golf GTI is CKD locally assembled in Malaysia, which means that the price is an attractive RM212,711. Purchasing at PACE will net you bonus goodies and savings.
