Johor Bahru hit by flash floods following two hours of heavy rain – cars submerged, water levels waist-high

Several parts of Johor Bahru have been hit by flash floods following two-hours of intense rain beginning from noon today, causing standstill traffic and partially submerging cars. The affected areas in the city centre were Jalan Yahya Awal, Jalan Ayer Molek and Jalan Wong Ah Fook.

The continuous downpour also affected areas around the Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA). Twitter users shared that some cars in the hospital compound had to be towed away, with high water levels preventing cars from entering the hospital.

The flooding was so severe that several posts on social media showed videos and images of murky water reaching knee-high levels. According to news reports, water levels were reportedly waist-high in areas such as Nong Chik.

It was reported that the areas around Menara Tabung Haji and Wisma Persekutuan were the worst hit, prompting chief minister of Johor, Onn Hafiz Ghazi, to visit the site to assess the severity of the damage caused by the flood. According to Channel News Asia, the flash floods were worsened by the high tides, causing water levels to rise rapidly.

With heavy rains persisting in parts of the country, it’s wise to look into flood/special perils coverage as during one of the ‘big floods’ last year, only 18% vehicles towed had flood coverage. According to the General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM), only 4% of Malaysian vehicle owners have purchased flood insurance coverage, so protect your car (and yourself) now!

Indeed too much development as with Kentucky, USA where flash flood have devestated the state but also killed 28 lives including children.

    The message is very clear.
Not having Flood and special peril insurance is :
    A CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER.
No point waiting for improved drainage and proper town planning.
If u have this insurance, just claim total lost, and move on.
BUT if u lack this, your nightmares have just begun.

  • This government is playing dumb with citizen lives what is the daily statistics of accident and dead?. Not bother try to portray Malaysia is a rich country in term vehicles to population. What is the point we have the highest road fatalities in world.and Insurance companies turn blind by increasing the premium, loading and other additional premium.A day will come unable to see the road when driving cos flooded with vehicles as now beginning to see in cities and big towns.Public transport is dead or in shambles as we senior citizen eager and anxious when it becomes a reality to lesser our burden.Unless the government and the related agencies come to senses.

U can wait donkey years as long as this “kami akan memantau mentality ” is sticking around.
Nothing will be done for another decade or so.

Nah doubt they would even want to memantau, since that environmental man said that Malaysia is not a climate vulnerable country last year to begin with. So believe it at your own cost.

        • They are not gods nor deities so what else can they do about climate change other than “memantau sahaja”? At least they care to do it and not push for more development like a certain island state. Have you seen the flying highway turn aqueduct whenever it rains?
