Ex-police chief warns against building drag racing venues to curb illegal racing, idea may backfire

The proposal to build drag racing venues for mat rempit (illegal motorcycle racers) in order to make illegal racing safe may backfire, former Kuala Lumpur police chief Dell Akbar Khan told The Malaysian Insight.

The former KL police chief warned of past failed attempts to legalise said illegal racing as it came with unintended consequences. “When I suggested that mat rempit be allowed to race in a proper circuit back in the 1980s, the idea was to make the activity safe.

“Little did we know back then, that right after the (legal) race, these mat rempit would go straight out and continue to race illegally on the streets. We thought that by allowing them to do it on track, the problem would be solved but it didn’t stop them,” Dell said, adding that the government must study the issue in-depth this time.

This is a revisiting of a similar subject, one that had also surfaced in 2016 when Dell stated his opinion that the permitting of street racing in Kuala Lumpur may result in a rise in gambling. In the past, the former KL police chief was responsible for hauling up illegal racers in the 1980s before allowing them to race on the Shah Alam circuit at the time.

More recently, Malaysian prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob mooted a plan to build a drag racing circuit in every state in Malaysia, which was revealed earlier this month.

PH promised all those in 100 days of take over. They stayed over 600 days so they have plenty of time to fulfill all those manifesto 6 times over. The buck stops at PH and they failed.

If this Gov got brains, nonsensical proposal like this might not have happened. At least we have an Ex-Police chief that have more brains than those UMNO led BN ministers sitting in the office thinking of stupid things like this to attract vote.

How naïve these people … build a track for them and illegal racing will stop. What about opening a shop with intention for people to rob to stop the crime and whalla.. no more crime in the country.

  • Do not pamper them. Do not subsidize them. If they do not work, they have no money to stay and eat. They will go to work really hard. Then, they should have no more energy. Do not mention to be mat rempit, fuxk also no energy.

Easy for him to say now that he retired. So during his tenure as Police Chief just what did he do to solve this problem. Or did he just pass it onto the next person when he retired and basically washed his hands of this matter? Then he would be the last person to diss any solution since he never did it himself.

Other developed countries in europe have thousands of small race tracks. Their gov provide avenue for motor racing development. But at the same time, the traffic regulation is very strict. So the police still need to do their job depite gov initiative to erect more local tracks. I

Your handle is AUtobahn and you say the traffic regulation is very strict? Dont you realise some stretch of the autobahn do not have speed limit? Unlike our highway where there is even some 60kph 3 lane wide highways!!!

In europe only the police do traffic regulations.

Here even the DOT (JPJ) cari makan on the streets. So how?

  • Aiyo… why stick your nose into it.
The drag circuit is a good idea.

It encourages more of them to join the club and risk their lives legally.
It’s a good way to get rid of them legally too. lol….

Nowdays used Axia or Kelisa is cheaper than new Ysuku. Just banned motorcycle license to teenages from 17 to 21 years. Only allow driving license for 1000cc automatic car for them. No worry of rempit. Safer for them to commute to school also. Petrol also not so expensive.
