Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz was present at the launch of the BYD Atto 3 today, and the newly minted minister of international trade and industry (MITI) shared his ministry’s targets in regards to electric vehicles in Malaysia.
“The government strongly supports the EV agenda to ensure a dynamic and more sustainable future for all Malaysians. The National Automotive Policy, or NAP 2020, and Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint outline the government’s direction in the development of the nation’s EV industry,” said Zafrul.
“We are currently committed to driving efforts to attract EV investments and meeting the national target of 15% total industry volume (TIV) for EV and hybrid by 2030 and 38% of TIV by 2040. In terms of charging infrastructure, the goal is to have 10,000 public charging stations by 2025,” he continued.
“To achieve these goals, the national EV taskforce (NEVT) led by MITI and comprising relevant government ministries and agencies are sworn to carry out the permutational EV development practice. To ensure the strategies remain relevant, NEVT will review and implement new ones to promote the healthy EV industry in Malaysia,” he added.
In addition, Zafrul said there will be continued discussions with relevant stakeholders to further grow the EV industry here, which includes attracting investments for local assembly of EVs and promoting aftersales support.
At present, fully-imported (CBU) EVs are exempt from import excise duties until December 31, 2024 following an extension laid out in Budget 2023, while locally-assembled (CKD) EVs are until December 31, 2025.
Until I see a charging station in Bota, that’s when I’ll buy an EV.
bota kanan ke bota kiri?
There is one AC charger inside UTP. I was told it is free – can check in Setel app
Not only push EV sales, we need more and faster charging stations also, at malls, residences condominium etc.
it’s not just about charging stations… as a country do we have enough electric generated to cater for this demand? many countries are rationing power supply, and we wouldn’t want to get into that situation by stretching supply too thin.
Meanwhile some countries are limiting EV charging LOL

Id MITI really wants RAKYAT to have “Affortable and Accessible” EV ….. Remove ALL Permits, AP, Taxes, Duties, etc. OPEN COMPETITION for ANY EV manufacturers to enter. Like Philipines and Thailand. Malaysia still … needs Permits, Alibaba agents, etc for doing business here ????
We need new law regarding this…
Your wish will be granted in ten years
If there are enough supply to meet market demand, people will not buy ICE cars period. Geely makes EVs, they will do the retooling necessary to make EVs locally if incentives are given, and such incentives will bring other EV makers to Malaysia. This is a chance for Malaysia to make back lost grounds to Thailand and Indonesis because of poor decision making and lack of language abilities to learn the latest breakthroughs from the international technological fields needed to handle and manage EV technologies…
Many people don’t realised that the charging cost for 100kwh EV car using a DC charger is double to cost compared to ICE cars that pumps RON95 travelling the same distance That is if you’ve signed up as a platinum members. For pay per charge is double the price of non member rate. Worse it always achieve less than half the mileage displayed.
EV ke PHEV ke H2 fuel cell ke still JEM lah if keep promoting personal vehicle centric society. LRT yang ada pun keep breaking down how to become negara maju
Build more charging station, remove petrol subsidies and reduce/remove all taxes related to EV for the time being for next 10 years that will help to accelerate the adoption.
