2024 Yamaha MT-09 revealed – 10 years of the Dark Side of Japan, upgrades and updates

A decade on after its first appearance in 2013, the 2024 Yamaha MT-09 breaks cover with equipment upgrades and cosmetic updates for next year’s riding season. This includes items such as the seats, suspension, braking system and fuel tank.

Power generation remains the same, with the 890 cc, Crossplane CP3 inline-triple powering the MT-09. The engine is EU5+ compliant and produces 119 PS at 11,000 rpm with 93 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm.

A six-speed gearbox with assist and slipper clutch is equipped with Yamaha’s third generation up-and-down quickshifter, delivering power to the rear wheel via chain. For those liking the induction roar of a triple, Yamaha has inserted “acoustic grilles” into the redesigned fuel tank to “accentuate the high frequency sounds, especially at higher speeds.”

New for the MT-09 is a 5-inch TFT-LCD instrument panel with connectivity to the rider’s smartphone via Bluetooth and the Yamaha MyRide app. The screen also features full map navigation using the Garmin StreetCross app and in conjunction with a helmet headset.

Additionally, the ride modes on the MT-09 can be controlled via the new handlebar buttons or using the MyRide app. Three preset ride modes – Sport, Street and Rain – are available along with two customisable modes.

A six-axis Intertial Measurement Unit (IMU), developed from the Yamaha R1 superbike, gives the MT-09 three levels of traction control. The IMU also manages slide control, front wheel lift and brake control, plus a Back Slip Regulator (BSR) that controls rear wheel lockup under hard braking by limiting engine torque.

The front forks are fully-adjustable with 41 mm diameter upside-down fork legs while the rear monoshock is adjustable and comes with a review linkage for a smoother ride. Bridgestone Battleax Hypersport S23M tyres are fitted to the forged alloy wheels.

Brembo supplies a radial master cylinder, acting on twin 298 mm discs with four-piston brake callipers on the front wheel while a single 245 mm disc stops the rear wheel. Seat height on the MT-09 is set at 825 mm while 14-litres of fuel is carried in the tank and weight is listed at 193 kg wet.

Cosmetic changes include a new housing for the LED headlight, now a fully enclosed unit which flows into the new fuel tank. The seat position for the MT-09 is revised for 2024, with the handlebar now set lower and customisable to one of two positions.

The rider foot rest is also adjustable while the seat is now a two-piece unit. For Europe, there are three colour options for the MT-09 – Midnight Cyan, Icon Blue and Tech Black.
