It seems like supercar makers like to sync their product development cycles with each other. We’ve heard that Ferrari was making a successor to the LaFerrari for a while now, and with other niche competitors like the Bugatti Tourbillon and the spectacular GMA T.50 already on the market, the time is ripe for a new marquee hypercar from a major manufacturer.
Right on time, McLaren has released a teaser for a new top-of-the-line model, set to debut on October 6. In the video, the company asks several employees – including CEO Michael Leiters, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown, product strategy boss Jamie Corstorphine and F1 driver Oscar Piastri – what makes a “1” car, referring to both the seminal F1 and the hybrid-powered P1.
Based on this, we can expect the new car to feature a simple alphanumeric name with a letter next to a “1”. The consensus seems to be that the next model will also need to be a once-in-a-generation hypercar that represents the pinnacle of McLaren’s automotive efforts and push the boundaries of what’s possible. No pressure, then.
Not much is known about the car, only that it is rumoured to feature an all-new V8 engine, unrelated to the one in the 750S. It’s also likely to massively improve on the P1’s plug-in hybrid range, trumping it on both performance (a combined 916 PS and 900 Nm, a zero-to-100 km/h time of 2.8 seconds, a top speed of 349 km/h) and efficiency (an all-electric range of 10 km).
