Following its preview in August, the 2024 MG5 sedan is set for its official Malaysian launch this week on October 3, MG Motor Malaysia has announced. As revealed during its preview, the MG5 is estimated to be priced below the RM100k mark, and this will be a fully imported (CBU) model from Thailand.
Already on sale in Indonesia where it is known as the MG5 GT, the C-segment offering measures 4,675 mm long, 1,842 mm wide, 1,473 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,680 mm and will compete against the likes of the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Mazda 3.
Going by the specifications of the Indonesian-market model, the MG5 is expected to feature a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated petrol inline-four engine rated to output 114 PS AT 6,000 rpm and 150 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm. Drive goes to the front wheels through a CVT with eight virtual ratios, and it is this combination that is also used for the model sold in Thailand, where it is also known as the MG5.
Exterior kit as shown on the preview car include LED daytime running lights and automatic headlamps, a powered sunroof, LED taillights, 17-inch ‘Tomahawk’ alloy wheels, while the cabin gets black leather upholstery with red accents, a six-way powered driver’s seat, single-zone automatic air-conditioning with PM2.5 air filter and rear vents, six speakers as well as a seven-inch digital instrument cluster.
Infotainment is by a 10.25-inch central touchscreen, offering Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and a 360-degree camera suite. ADAS is by the MG Pilot suite that is comprised of a blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert, lane change assist and rear collision warning, but without AEB.
As indicated at its preview, the MG5 will be offered in five colours, namely Nuclear Yellow, Dynamic Red, Arctic White, Black Pearl and Camden Grey, and each car will be covered by a five-year, unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty; its powertrain, specifically the engine and transmission gets a seven-year, unlimited-mileage warranty. You can watch the launch live on Facebook at 5.30 pm this Thursday.

So what’s the MY Ncap score?
Slicing market shares away from T.Camry H.Accord Mazda6
the engine power output is a disappointment.
This car competes with Vios and City. But anyways, this car is better, good power and more interested inside than Vios
It actually looks good.
I want MG7
That yellow on that body style is hilarious. Level of art at outer space.
Looks big but with the tiny 114PS and 150Nm of torque…is it going to be able to haul that largish body efficiently?
why would anyone buy this over City/Vios/S70? Nothing attractive in particular. Doesn’t even have AEB. 1.5 NA for C-segment size somemore. Underpowered like mad.
Naza Forte 1.6NA 124ps weight at 1251kg while this MG5 1.5NA 114ps weight at 1260kg. Based on this number already can tell the MG5 confirm underpowered even compare to the car model 14 years ago.
13 years ago Kia taking Forte to challenge City and Vios, similar now the MG5 challenging the City and Vios. But in 2011 Vios and City did not have push start (vios FL got), ESC, auto dimming rearview mirror (dxmn till now B segment car still do not have), 6 speed AT (City 5AT and Vios 4AT), reverse camera, auto headlamp, auto aircond etc.
But nowadays City and Vios have all these features and also City interior space is even larger than some C-segment such as Mazda 3 and Altis. With lighter weight Vios and City have better power weight ration than the MG5. MG5 got turbo version and if the turbo version is selling RM105k I believe it can bring some challenge to City and Vios. The 1.5NA even if selling at RM95k I guess the sales figure gonna be very pity.
