My50 monthly pass to gain new payment options next year; pass users no longer required to use MyKad

From next year, My50 unlimited travel pass users will no longer be required to use their MyKad, because alternative payment options are set to be introduced. According to transport minister Anthony Loke, new payment methods are being planned by stakeholders.

This includes the use of the Touch ‘n Go card and QR codes vie mobile phones, the New Straits Times reports. “Once the system integration process is complete, users will be able to use a Touch ‘n Go card or access via their smartphone, using a QR code. These are the details we are working on,” he said.

He said the change is being made as users have voiced out that utilising the MyKad is inconvenient when it comes to public transport. “They don’t like using their MyKad each time for scanning, fearing it might be misplaced,” he said. He added the move will also forward the digitalisation of the country’s public transport system.

Introduced in 2019, the My50 is an unlimited travel pass that offers Malaysians 30 consecutive days of unlimited rides on Rapid KL LRT, MRT, monorail, BRT, Rapid KL bus and MRT feeder bus services in the Klang Valley for RM50 a month.

Loke said that there were around 220,000 monthly My50 users on average at present, compared to only 98,000 in 2019, highlighting its popularity. “In just five years, the number of My50 pass users has doubled, showing that this initiative has attracted more people to use public transport,” he said.

Don’t like using mykad but they are ok with using their phones!!… will they not misplace or drop their phones?

and the irony is they want to move the people towards “digitalization” while Trump is going to ban all the CBDC digitalizations
