The Hyundai Ioniq 9 will make its debut at AutoMobility LA – Los Angeles Auto Show on November 21. The three-row electric SUV will be unveiled by Jose Munoz, the current Hyundai and Genesis US chief who will become president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company from Jan 1, 2025, the first foreigner to lead the South Korean carmaker.

“The upscale, adventure-ready Ioniq 9 will showcase a surprisingly spacious interior, modern aerodynamic design, reassuring range and the Ioniq family’s signature digital pixel lighting,” the company said in a statement.

“Ioniq 9’s aerodynamic silhouette, beautiful curves, and pure volume are engineered to create a cohesive form that feels sculptural. Ioniq’s very own Parametric Pixels are seamlessly integrated into its flushed surfaces. Inside, soft elliptical shapes flow throughout the space, creating a serene and inviting environment. Inside, Ioniq 9 promises a lounge for you and your loved ones,” said Simon Loasby, senior VP and head of Hyundai Design Center.

Ever since the Seven concept was revealed back in 2021 at the same LA show, we’ve been waiting for a big SUV to top the Ioniq EV range. The model was initially rumoured to be called Ioniq 7, as per the concept, but the first official teaser from last month confirmed the Ioniq 9 name.

Teaser images hint at a design that appears faithful to the Seven, with details such as the single line of Parametric Pixel daytime running lights (which appear top be set within larger rectangular headlight clusters), an upswept window line kink, thick D-pillars and an upright rear end.

Even the sharp creases highlighting the rear haunches, said to be inspired by Korean hanbok, have made it. We aren’t expecting to see the concept’s suicide doors in two days time, however.

The rest of the “Aerosthetic” design is apparently inspired by boats, with a single curve for the roofline and long wheelbase providing “ample space for all passengers, including those in the third row.” Other touches include turbine-like multi-spoke alloy wheels, flush pop-out door handles and T-shaped vertical taillights, the latter replacing the low horizontal light bar on the Seven.

Built on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) that also underpins the Ioniq 5 and 6, the Ioniq 9 could share the Kia EV9’s powertrain, which has 385 PS (283 kW), 700 Nm and 505 km of range from a 99.8 kWh battery.

The Ioniq 9 will be manufactured in the US, at the new Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia.
