Police issued 95,298 summonses for red light running from Jan-Nov 2024 – car drivers caught the most

From January to November this year, a total of 95,298 summonses were issued against road users nationwide for running a red light. This is according to statement by Bukit Aman traffic investigation and enforcement department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri.

“The offence of running red lights is a serious violation of traffic regulations and has the potential to cause fatal accidents,” he said. “JSPT will not compromise on those who violate the rules. Stricter monitoring and enforcement will be carried out at hotspot locations. CCTVs will also be upgraded at primary intersections to ensure that any offences are detected and perpetrators arrested immediately,” he added.

Of the 95,298 summonses issued in the first 11 months of 2024, car drivers recorded the highest number with 44,889 summonses issued, followed by motorcyclists (39,468), lorry drivers (3,937) and other vehicles (7,004).

Mohd Yusri said JSPT is also collaborating with other government agencies, including local authorities, to ensure that red light violations are acted on under Section 79(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The penalty, if found guilty, is a fine of not less than RM300 and not more than RM2,000.

In conjunction with the ASEAN 2025 Chairmanship, Mohd Yursi called on road users and the community to always display a responsible attitude as well as comply with the rules and instructions of the authorities to enhance the country’s image.
