Rolls-Royce to invest RM1.7 billion in expansion of Goodwood plant; second EV model to debut this year

Rolls-Royce is set to invest over 300 million pounds sterling (RM1.66 billion) for the expansion of its in Goodwood, United Kingdom where it will prepare to make additional room for its “increasingly complex and high-value” Bespoke and Coachbuild projects – such as the Boat Tail – commissioned by its customers, the luxury marque has announced.

The marque describes the investment as “the next step in the company’s commitment to creating value for clients by handcrafting the most complex, personal, and valuable luxury goods while providing an unparalleled client experience,” following a record year for Bespoke builds with Bespoke content value having increased 10% on average per car year-on-year, according to the company.

The eighth-generation Phantom Extended was the most extensively customised model in 2024, with the brand’s fist EV, the Spectre coming in second for the highest level of Bespoke content per car last year. The Middle East was the region which saw the greatest take-up of Bespoke content by average value per car, followed by North America and Europe.

While Rolls-Royce is adapting its plant to meeting growing demand for Bespoke model production, the marque is not aiming to increase actual production volume, its CEO Chris Brownridge told Autocar.

“Now we’re making 25 to 26 cars a day, so the current facility is at capacity. What we’re not trying to do with this extension is create more capacity for volume, because this is more about space for the projects that we’re seeing growing demand for: more bespoke and more coachbuilt motor cars, and these projects need space because they take time,” Brownridge said.

As the Phantom flagship line continues to be the rarest Rolls-Royce model in the range and it celebrates its centenary this year, the Goodwood marque will also introduce its second EV model in 2025, following the debut of its first EV, the Spectre in October 2022.

No further details have been officially released regarding Goodwood’s next EV, though it can be expected to be closely related to the Spectre, which packs a 585 PS/900 Nm dual-motor, AWD powertrain and a 120 kWh battery for 520 km of range.
