Top 20 best-selling cars in Malaysia in 2024 – Perodua sweeps podium spots; Saga in 4th; X50 ahead of HR-V

With Perodua commanding a substantial lead in terms of vehicle registrations based on data from the road transport department (JPJ), it isn’t much of a surprise that most of the brand’s models populate the top 20 list of the best-selling cars in Malaysia.

Referring to JPJ’s data, the Bezza is the most registered car in the country last year with 100,814 units, placing it ahead of fellow stablemates like the Axia (88,137 units) and Myvi (72,214 units), all of which enable Perodua to sweep the podium.

In fourth place is the Proton Saga with 69,863 units, while the fifth and sixth positions are occupied by more Perodua models, namely the Alza (44,374 units) and Ativa (36,039 units).

Coming in seventh is the Honda City with 29,246 units, which is enough to beat out the Toyota Vios in eighth with 28,667 units. However, keep in mind that JPJ records both the sedan and hatchback versions of the City as a single model. As such, if we combined the figures of the Vios and its hatchback equivalent – the Yaris (10,710 units) – the combined tally of Toyota’s B-segment sedan/hatchback offerings is 39,377 units.

After the Vios is the only pick-up truck on the top 20 list, which is the Toyota Hilux in ninth place with 26,738 units. Rounding off the top 10 is the Proton X50 (22,674 units) that got an update in the middle of 2024 and managed to fend off the Honda HR-V that claimed the 11th spot with 21,303 units.

Below the 20,000-unit mark, we find the 12th-placed Proton S70 that saw 18,880 registrations in its first full year of sales – the sedan was launched in November 2023. If following Proton’s marketing approach – continue the Great Debate here – the S70 leads in terms of C-segment sedan sales, beating out the Civic that is ranked lower. The S70’s sedan compatriot, the Persona, came in close with 18,839 units, which is enough for the 13th spot on the list.

Perodua currently sells six models in the Malaysia, and while the five mentioned above are high up in the list, the Aruz is placed further down in 14th place with 16,522 registrations. The Alphard is a surprise in 15th place with 15,395 units, but this is likely due to JPJ also including grey import or reconditioned cars in its data.

In the bottom five, the Toyota Corolla Cross sits in 15th with 14,805 units, followed by the Civic (11,872 units) in 17th, CR-V (11,357 units) in 18th and the aforementioned Yaris (10,710 units) in 19th. The WR-V with its 9,074 units didn’t break the 10,000-unit mark but it was enough for it to make an appearance in the 20th spot on the list.

When the cheapest cars are getting more in liew of more expensive car brands, it means people are getting poorer. There is something seriously wrong with this country not seen in the past 60 years.

Nothing is crazy about selling 100k ~RM40k car in a ‘protected’ market not even if the Saga somehow manage to pull it off.

Considering how much the all new vios was bashed by influencers and car reviewers (PT included) for its low headroom at the back, no folding seats and spare tyre, the number of units sold is actually quite surprising.

Vios sales was marginally similar to city sedan and city hatchback combined even though the honda is touted to be a better performer, quieter and has better quality dash.

    • The handling, dashboard, seats posture for Vios and driving with the DNGA + D-CVT has its oomph.

Saga being the main seller for Proton yet they barely care to do much of an upgrade atleast facelift it to rival Bezza which has a modernized looks and LED headlamps with fog lamps while Saga uses halogen and fog lamp removed lol. Proton are taking Saga for granted here
