According to a report by Car Expert, the Mazda 6 will be retired in Australia after being on sale for 22 years. While there is still a supply of cars available at dealership, production of the model, which is available as a sedan or wagon, has been discontinued for the market.
The discontinuation of the model comes with Australian Design Rule 98/00 set to come into effect on March 1, 2025. This requires the standard fitment of car-to-car autonomous emergency braking (AEB) in all new vehicles sold in the country. Mazda confirmed that the Mazda 6 hadn’t been certified to ADR 98/00 despite coming standard with the active safety system.
Australia joins other countries in axing the Mazda 6, with the model leaving the United States and Canada in 2021, the United Kingdom in 2023, as well as China and Japan in 2024. It is currently still available in certain markets in Europe, Asia (Malaysia included) and Africa.
Across six generations – the Mazda 6 was launched in Australia in 2002 – nearly 150,000 units of the model have been sold in the country. The rise of the SUV diminished the sedan’s popularity from 14,783 units sold in its best year of 2025 to just 1,354 units in 2024.
It didn’t help that the current Mazda 6 is a third-generation model first introduced in 2012, although it has been facelifted over the years. The EZ-6/6e is touted to be the all-electric successor to the Mazda 6, although this is a joint venture product developed with China’s Changan Automobile.
