US president Donald Trump signs executive order revoking Biden’s 50% EV target, reverse EV policies

According to a report by Reuters, United States president Donald Trump has revoked a 2021 executive order signed by his predecessor Joe Biden that aimed to ensure 50% of all new vehicles in the country were electric by 2030.

In addition to this, the newly minted US president said in an executive order dated January 20, 2025 that he would halt the distribution of unspent government funds for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations from a USD5 billion fund. A waiver for states to adopt zero-emission vehicle rules by 2035 has also been ended, and the ending of EV tax credits is also under consideration.

Next up, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be directed to reconsider rules for stringent emissions rules that would require automakers have 30% to 56% of total sales be made up of EVs by 2032 in order to comply with federal emissions rules – this will be in parallel with rules issued by the Department of Transportation.

Also in his order was a move to repeal a waiver granted to California in December by the EPA allowing the state to end the sale of gasoline-only vehicles by 2035 – this rule has been adopted by 11 other states. Trump has long been against the “EV mandate” and said in his order that promoting true consumer choice was essential for economic growth and innovation. Of course, he also said the opposite while campaigning.

US and their “ally” UK will abandon EV development. I am afraid it’s a bet they will lose.

Everyone thinks EV tech will stay at this price, this range and these charging speeds forever. The tipping point will come when a real range of 800km, charging speeds of <10mins and ultra cheap EVs becomes a reality. After that, those metrics will go even beyond that. What then? The future is still ICE?

    • Trump doing this bcos American big 3 brands are lagging behind in EV development. This is protectionist policy, plain and simple, from the so-called number one free market in the world.

Trump knows that Tesla cannot compete with Chinese EVs and all these while he is against China. so he stop any initiatives that promotes EV. This guy only knows how to think of himself rather than on a bigger picture.

But why Tesla china sales are doing well and able to compete with chinese EVs as I saw many Tesla everywhere in china besides chinese EVs
Even Tesla and Chinese EVs are still able compete each other.
Btw, did you know that Tesla will get benefit from this where other ev manufacturers will get affected (excluding chinese ev) as complaining that other ev manufacturers will get benefit over Tesla and chinese ev happened last year

EV battery production is more polluting & requires rare materials to be mined. Although a big mouth, he has some sense in him & made the right decision.
