PDRM issued 104,235 saman in five days of Op Selamat 23 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year holidays. Sounds like a lot of white papers, but in fact, the total number of saman issued is down by 43% compared to the previous operations.
According to JSPT Bukit Aman director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, Op Selamat 21 last year saw the cops hand out 183,033 summonses. He said that JSPT will do its research on whether the decline in saman is due to motorists following road regulations or if their safety campaigns and advocacy work have started to bear fruit.
He said that six main offences made up 49,339 of the total saman, and speeding topped the list with over 44,000 cases. The other reasons are overtaking using the emergency lane, running the red lights and driving while using the mobile phone. 3,609 JSPT officers were out and about in this Op Selamat, which started on January 28.
If you’re still on your CNY holidays, drive home safe and take a break if you’re nodding off.
