Alpine is about to drop its third model soon, with Auto Express reporting that the A390 – a new fastback EV SUV that has the Porsche Macan EV in its sights – will be unveiled on May 27.
The new A390 could have three electric motors – one up front, two out back – to give you as much as 600 hp in all. Besides all-wheel drive, there’ll be active torque vectoring, plus a more wallet-friendly two-motor version as well, says the British publication.
The platform is called AmpR Medium (previously known as CMF-EV), shared with the Renault Scenic and Nissan Ariya, but Alpine has made various chassis tweaks, including widening the track and fitting bigger brakes, to better deal with the power from those three motors.
The sole teaser image doesn’t reveal much apart from a full-width front light bar and ‘ALPINE’ lettering on the nose; perhaps it’s better to look at the A390_ß concept from last year’s Paris Motor Show for a clearer idea of what the production car will look like.
Those taut, athletic looks will not be all show and no go – Alpine calls it a ‘sport fastback’ and aims for it to drive like its A110 sports car (!), an EV version of which is also in the works.
The A390 will be the next addition to Alpine’s Dream Garage series of seven new battery-EVs that it aims to bring out by 2030, including the already-launched Renault 5-based A290 and the upcoming A110 EV. AE says two more SUVs should be out in 2027 and 2028, the largest of which should rival the Porsche Cayenne. Exciting times ahead, for sure.
