BYD Atto 2 debuts at Bangkok Motor Show – sub-Atto 3 EV SUV; up to 312 km WLTP range; Malaysia next?

The BYD Atto 2 has made its debut at this year’s Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) after being spied several days prior. While the unit spotted out in the wild was right-hand drive, the example currently on display at the event is in left-hand drive form.

Known as the Yuan Up in China, the Atto 2 was revealed to the world in February 2024 and slots in between the Dolphin and Atto 3 (called the Yuan Plus in China). In terms of dimensions, the Atto 2 measures 4,310 mm long, 1,830 mm wide, 1,675 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,620 mm.

By comparison, the Dolphin we have here is 4,290 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, 1,570 mm and its wheelbase spans 2,700 mm. Meanwhile, the Atto 3, which recently got updated in Malaysia, is 4,455 mm long, 1,875 mm wide, 1,615 mm tall and the wheelbase is 2,720 mm.

In China, the Atto 2/Yuan Up is offered in five variants priced between 96,800 and 119,800 yuan (about RM59k and RM73k). Two powertrains are available, with the first sporting a front electric motor rated at 95 PS (94 hp or 70 kW) and 180 Nm of torque that is good for a 0-100 km/h time of 7.9 seconds.

This electric motor draws power from a Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with an energy capacity of 32 kWh for 301 km of range following the CLTC standard. There’s also the option of a 45.12-kWh unit that bumps the range to 401 km.

The larger battery can also be had with more powerful electric motor delivering 177 PS (174 hp or 130 kW) and 290 Nm with the same CLTC-rated range of 401 km. For global markets outside China, this is the version being offered, and it has a WLTP-rated range of 312 km. DC fast charging is capped at 65 kW for the larger battery (45 kW for the smaller one), with a 10-80% state of charge reached in 37 minutes, while an 11-kW AC wallbox charger fully charges the car in 5.5 hours.

In terms of equipment, this example comes with 16-inch wheels, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch rotating infotainment touchscreen and powered front seats. The Yuan Up/Atto 2 in its home market doesn’t come with active driver assistance systems as standard but these can be added as an option.

The debut of the Atto 2 in Thailand suggests the electric vehicle (EV) could also make its way to Malaysia to fill in the gap between the Dolphin (currently from RM100,700 to RM125,600 OTR) and the new Atto 3 Ultra at RM123,800. Are you hoping this EV comes here?

    • Every small car, though using petrol, also have same distance range as this car. And as long as if you charge this electric car at home, no issues when driving out. Besides, no matter which type of car was, will have one stop if driving long journey and also won’t take long to charge electric car when stopping at one station

High spec Atto 3 is already down to RM120,0000. So the current high spec Dolphin of 201 hp should be not more than RM101,000 with 1st year free insurance, 5 years free service & 1% interest rate?. Low spec Dolphin can be withdrawn from Malaysian market.

Atto 2 of 177hp to come in only in highest spec trim and not more than RM105,000?

With that 312km range the price should below RM60k as converted from Yuan, if more than RM 100+k that is terrible!
