A Chinese tyre maker is being investigated by Thailand’s industry ministry for allegedly smuggling defective tyres into the country and modifying them for resale as new tyres, reports The Nation Thailand.

Said tyres apparently had their original logos or brand names removed, and new branding printed on them before going on sale in Thailand. According to an unnamed source from the ministry, many of them were labelled ‘Made in Thailand’ and intended for export.

“The ministry fears that if these substandard tyres are exported under the guise of Thai-made products, it could severely impact Thailand’s image in global markets,” the source said, adding that although the firm, whose name is withheld pending the investigation, holds investment privileges for producing tyres in Thailand using China-imported raw materials, it apparently has an all-Chinese workforce.

Having received tip-offs, the ministry sent a team to inspect the firm’s factory, where the allegedly modified tyres were found stored among locally-produced tyres marked ‘for export only’. It is awaiting the company’s official explanation.
