Subaru is adding to its nascent electric vehicle range with a new model called the Trailseeker, which will be revealed at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) on Thursday. The SUV will join the Solterra and, like its sibling, is expected to be developed in conjunction with Toyota. The company is clearly looking to continue its tradition of having adventurous names for its SUVs, such as Forester and Crosstrek.
Not much has been revealed as yet, but the Pleiades brand will likely move away from the futuristic design of the Solterra/Toyota bZ4X twins with the Trailseeker, adopting a more conventional SUV aesthetic. A teaser image of Toyota’s version shows a car with a seemingly longer nose and a more upright rear windscreen, hinting at increased practicality.
The new model will likely be larger than the Solterra/bZ4X, given that the space under it on Toyota’s side will be taken up by the new Toyota C-HR+ and Urban Cruiser. That would make the Trailseeker a competitor to the likes of the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9, meaning that it will likely have three rows of seats. However, it will leave some space at the top of the lineup for the flagship Toyota Land Cruiser Se.
Toyota’s version of the Trailseeker will be one of three new EVs to be introduced in Europe in the coming year, including the aforementioned Land Cruiser Se and the electric version of the next-generation Hilux.
