Top 20 EV models in April 2025 – Proton eMas 7 stays top, Denza D9 outsells 009, X9; Seal beats Model 3

Referring to the latest vehicle registration data released by the road transport department (JPJ), the Proton eMas 7 was the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in Malaysia in April 2025, continuing the dominance it has held since January. Last month saw 799 units of the eMas 7 being registered, which is the highest single-month total so far and sees its year-to-date figure hit 2,537 units.

The eMas 7 is followed by a trio of BYD models, namely the Sealion 7 (393 units in April, 1,234 YTD), Atto 3 (321 units, 727 YTD) and M6 (190 units, 727 YTD). Completing the top five is the Denza D9 that managed 157 registrations for a YTD total of 395 units.

Moving on, the BYD Seal (134 units in April, sixth) edged out the Tesla Model 3 (90 units, seventh) in April 2025, but its YTD total of 460 units is still behind that of the Model 3 that recorded 608 units. Next comes the Xpeng X9 and Zeekr 009, both of which saw 77 registrations, although the latter narrowly beats the former when it comes to YTD (312 versus 300 units). Xpeng’s other model, the G6, managed 76 registrations for the tenth spot and reached a YTD total of 300 units.

Outside the top 10, the Chery Omoda E5 saw its best month in April with 44 units (YTD 92 units). GWM Ora (includes both the Good Cat and 07) also saw 44 registrations to bring its YTD tally to 145 units.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 makes its first appearance in a top 20 list this year with 32 units (60 YTD) in April 2025 for 13th place and is followed by the BMW iX1 (31 units, 97 YTD) in 14th, BMW iX2 (30 units, 162 YTD) in 15th and MG4 EV (27 units, 136 YTD) in 16th.

The Porsche Taycan came in 17th with 27 units and a YTD total of 122 units, likely inclusive of recon units that are counted by the JPJ. Another newcomer to the top 20 list is the Dongfeng Box that saw 24 units (YTD 45 units), while the final two EVs are the BMW i5 (19 units, 184 YTD) and Tesla Model Y (18 units, 126 YTD).

  • Sime might have wrestled a little numbers from Proton by selling Atto 3 cheaper but it also has killed the Dolphin completely. Only 10 units sold in April. The 2nd hand value also go into the ground. The RM100K limit is basically a nightmare thing to begin with for consumer.
