Melaka to improve street lighting in accident-prone areas, especially in rural locations, says chief minister

As part of its efforts to prevent recurring road tragedies, the Melaka state government says it will improve the level of street lighting in accident-prone areas, especially in rural locations, Bernama reports.

Chief minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said authorities are identifying roads where street lighting is urgently required, and steps will be taken to address the issue. He said that statistics by the state police’s traffic investigation and enforcement department revealed that 68 fatal road accidents and 7,871 cases of road mishaps were recorded from January to April this year.

The state will however need a larger budget than what it has to fully improve the level of street lighting. Last month, state public Works, infrastructure, public Facilities and transport committee chairman Datuk Hameed Mytheen Kunju Basheer said that the state government needs about RM25 million to address the issue, but only had an allocation of RM3.5 million for the year, with RM3 million of this coming from the federal government.

He added that Melaka also received RM1.7 million under the Malaysian Road Records Information (Marris) for the installation of street lighting in village areas this year, with the Melaka Tengah, Alor Gajah and Jasin districts to receive RM500,000 each from this, while RM200,000 would be provided to the state public works department (JKR).

“The amount is still a long way from solving the street lighting problem on state roads, as it does not include village roads,” he said.
