Thailand approves US$1.2 bil bid to host F1 in 2028

Thailand’s cabinet has approved a 40 billion baht (US$1.2 billion/RM5 billion) bid to host a Formula One (F1) street race in Bangkok in 2028, reports Reuters.

“In the next 2-3 years, Thailand will have world-class competition, which we never thought would actually happen in Thailand,” government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub said, adding that if successful, Bangkok would win a contract to host a race each year from 2028-2032.

After meeting F1 chief Stefano Domenicali in March, Thai prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said the country would commission a feasibility study into hosting a Grand Prix on a Bangkok street circuit from 2028, despite already having the FIA-accredited, MotoGP-hosting Buriram circuit.

“Thailand sees the opportunity to host a Formula One Grand Prix in the future as a key initiative to elevate our profile as a hub for international tourism and global events,” she said on social media.

In Malaysia meanwhile many are still hoping we will resume hosting F1, but still make a noise when SST items are broaden. Equivalent to almost RM5 billion, better build 100 new schools indead.

Let them suffer the financial losses. Not like we care. Heck their tuktuk drivers can go compete and race daredevil with them.
