The Mitsubishi Grandis returns for the European market, though this time around the nameplate is no longer for a three-row people-mover, and instead becomes the name for compact SUV based on the CMF-B platform as used in the wider Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. Like the ASX, the car is a rebadged version of a Renault, this time the longer Symbioz.
As the nameplate returns to the continent after 13 years, the compact crossover will feature mild-hybrid and hybrid powertrains. The mild-hybrid is a 140 PS 1.3 litre direct-injection petrol unit, offered with a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission options.
Meanwhile, the hybrid powertrain is a naturally aspirated 109 PS 1.8 litre petrol unit mated with a 36 kW (49 PS) electric drive motor and a 15 kW (20 PS) generator, along with a power electronics box with two built-in inverters and converters. Energy for the electric drive is stored in a 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery, and drive is transmission to the driven wheels via a smart multi-mode gearbox, says Mitsubishi.
The hybrid powertrain version of the Grandis gets three drive modes – EV mode which runs solely on the e-motor, hybrid mode which combines electric and combustion powertrains, and regenerative mode which employs regenerative braking to harvest energy during deceleration for storing in the traction battery.
The hybrid variant also gets an “E-save” mode that can be activated by the driver, and this works to maintain battery charge at a minimum of 40% to reserve battery charge for EV driving, or where additional assistance is required.
Inside, the 2025 Grandis is now a five-seater, with a second row seat sliding function that offers up to 160 mm of adjustment. This allows luggage capacity to grow from 434 litres to 566 litres with the seats slid forward, and up to 1,455 litres with the rear seats folded.
Accessibility to the luggage compartment is aided by power remote opening for the tailgate, which also gets a hands-free function courtesy of a sensor under the rear bumper that senses the user’s foot when the keyfob is present.
The Grandis features a panoramic glass roof that brings electrochromic functionality, enabling users to switch between clear and shaded modes to reduce glare and heat. In addition to the clear and shaded modes, this also offers split functionality to enable a clear front section of the roof with a shaded rear section, or vice versa.
For infotainment, the Grandis gets a portrait-oriented 10.4-inch Smartphone-link Display Audio (SDA) unit with Google built-in, include the Google Assistant, Google Maps, Google Play and more. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are offered here for wireless smartphone connectivity.
Four drive modes can be selected through the SDA infotainment system as well – Perso, Eco, Comfort, and Sport. Meanwhile, the Mitsubishi Motors mobile application brings a car finder function for owners to locate their parked car from their smartphone, while a digital key function offers remote locking and unlocking, as well as engine operation.
In terms of driving assistance systems, the 2025 Grandis offers adaptive cruise control with stop and go, Mi-Pilot, automatic high beam, blind spot warning, distance warning, driver attention monitor, emergency lane assist, forward collision mitigation, intelligent speed assistance, lane centering assist, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, occupant safe exit assist, rear AEB, rear cross traffic alert, and a rear view camera.
The Mitsubishi Grandis will be manufactured at the Renault plant in Valladolid, Spain, where its CMF-B platform relations the Mitsubishi ASX and Renault Captur are also produced.
