The new BMW M2 CS (based on the second-generation G87 model) has managed to lap the 20.823-km Nurburgring in a record 7:25.25 minutes. Set by BMW M development driver Jorg Weidinger on April 11 prior to the debut of the M2 CS at the end of May this year, the time beat the previous record for compact cars by eight seconds.
The M2 CS dethroned Audi RS3, a five-cylinder hot hatch with all-wheel drive that managed 7:33.123 minutes. For further context, the previous best time set by a M2 model was by Weidinger in April 2023, when he completed the course in 7:38.7 minutes. Two years later, he beat this time by 13 seconds, breaking the class record of 7:30 minutes for the first time.
Other BMW M cars that have hit times under 7:30 minutes include t he M4 CS, M4 CSL and M3 CS. Of the three, the M4 CSL holds the best lap time ever recorded for a BMW Group production car at 7:18.137 minutes.
The M2 CS is a hotter version of the standard M2 that retains the S58 3.0 litre twin-turbo inline-six petrol engine, albeit improved to output 530 PS (523 hp or 390 kW) and 650 Nm of torque. Drive is sent exclusively to the rear wheels via an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission. With more grunt, it’s quicker in a 0-100 km/h sprint at 3.8 seconds, while also capable of a higher top speed of 302 km/h.
Other changes include a chassis that is eight mm lower, with bespoke tuning for the springs, dampers and control systems. Additionally, the CS is roughly 30 kg lighter compared to the standard car thanks to use of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) for various exterior and interior components.
