Han’s Mazda RX-7 VeilSide Fortune from Tokyo Drift heading to auction – from RM1.4 million estimated

Fans of the Fast & Furious movie franchise will be familiar with Han’s Mazda RX-7 VeilSide Fortune, which appeared in a few scenes in 2006’s The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. With its distinctive Veilside bodykit and colour combination, it was one of the most recognisable movie cars of the 2000s.

That car now joins others from the franchise by heading to the auction block, with Bonhams set to sell the car off on July 11 in conjunction with this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. Estimated to sell for between 250,000 and 350,000 pounds (about RM1.4 million and RM2 million), the car is taxed, MoT’d, road legal and carries the chassis number ‘FD3S111461’.

According to Bonhams, Universal Studios commissioned VeilSide to build the car, which saw company founder Hironao Yokomaku and his team fit their aggressive-looking Fortune wide bodykit that added over 200 mm to the car’s width. This was paired with 19-inch Andrew Premier Series Racing Evolution 5 wheels and Pirelli P Zero Nero tyres.

The example going up for sale was used primarily for stunt and static scenes rather than drifting sequences, and is understood to be one of only two surviving examples used during the filming of the movie.

Bonhams notes that the car is in generally excellent condition, still finished in pearlescent orange with high-gloss black accents. Even the production markings done during filming are still present, including ‘#71 HANS’ labels on the passenger door, engine bay and scuttle, as well as the marks left by camera mounts.

“During pre-shipment preparation the RX-7 was comprehensively overhauled, including a new clutch, brakes, coil-over suspension and Blitz Nur-Spec exhaust system. The RX-7’s twin-rotor turbocharged engine was rebuilt by legendary tuner RE-Amemiya and is in close-to-stock tune, producing around 280 PS. The car is said to weigh a little over 1,050kg. Only some 5,000 miles (8,047 km) have been covered since the aforementioned works were carried out,” the auction house added.

Other noteworthy points are VeilSide’s own racing bucket seats with composite shells, while the cabin is trimmed in carbon fibre, aluminium, velour, vinyl and chrome trim. There’s also an Alpine sound system, a polished NOS bottle (currently not connected), a vehicle tracker and custom-made stainless-steel prop for the rear hatch to showcase the sound system.

After filming wrapped, New Era Imports, who had been involved on the film with VeilSide and Universal Studios, acquired the RX-7 and remained its sole owned in the United Kingdom. To-date, the car has covered 107,480 km (66,785 miles) from new and has been carefully stored and driven only in dry conditions. The car comes with documents relating its provenance, authenticity and screen use to make sure it isn’t just a replica but the real deal.
