BYD Atto 2 EV previewed at PACE 2025 – compact SUV with 350 km range; X50/HR-V size; launch on July 24

The BYD Atto 2 will make its Malaysian launch debut next week on July 24, 2025. Before that happens, the new electric vehicle (EV) is being previewed for the first time here at the paultan.org Premium Auto Car Expo (PACE) 2025, which is ongoing from July 19-20 at the Setia City Convention Centre (SCCC).

So, what is the Atto 2? Well, it is a compact electric SUV that is called the Yuan Up in China. First revealed back in February 2024, it will slot in between the Dolphin and Atto 3 – both of which we currently have here – when launched. In terms of dimensions, the Atto 2 is sized appropriately to take up its position in the line-up, as this overview indicates:

BYD Atto 2

  • Length: 4,310 mm
  • Width: 1,830 mm
  • Height: 1,675 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2,620 mm

BYD Dolphin

  • Length: 4,290 mm
  • Width: 1,770 mm
  • Height: 1,570 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2,700 mm

BYD Atto 3

  • Length: 4,455 mm
  • Width: 1,875 mm
  • Height: 1,615 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2,720 mm

If you need a comparison model that isn’t a BYD, the Atto 2 is around the size of a Proton X50, which measures 4,330 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, 1,609 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. The HR-V can also be another point of comparison size-wise at 4,347 mm long, 1,790 mm wide, 1,591 mm tall and with a wheelbase of 2,610 mm.

Most of you will be interested to know the price of the Atto 2, for which we don’t have a definite answer for now. If you would like to make an educated guess, here’s some context: the Dolphin currently starts from RM100,700 on-the-road without insurance for the base Dynamic Standard and goes up to RM125,600 for the top-spec Premium Extended.

Meanwhile, the Atto 3 only comes in Ultra guise that goes for RM124,500 OTR without insurance. It’s possible the Atto 2’s pricing will overlap one or both of its siblings, so post your guesses in the comments below.

Powertrain details for our market are also not available for now. In its home market of China, the Atto 2/Yuan Up is offered with three powertrain combinations, the first with a 32-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery powering a front electric motor rated at 95 PS (94 hp or 70 kW) and 180 Nm of torque.

This setup is good for a CLTC-rated range of 301 km, but there’s also the option of a larger 45.12-kWh unit for 401 km of range. The latter can be had with a more power electric motor serving up 177 PS (174 hp or 130 kW) and 290 Nm, making it the third option that curiously has the same range of 401 km, or 312 km if following the WLTP standard.

It is assumed that the larger battery (45.12 kWh) and more powerful electric motor (177 PS) would be the combination for our market, but BYD recently revealed that Australia will get the Atto 2 with the 177 PS motor and an even larger 51.1-kWh battery for about 350 km of WLTP range. This combo could be what comes our way but we’ll wait for official word from BYD Malaysia.

In terms of charging, the Atto 2 in China supports DC fast charging capped at 65 kW for the larger 45.12-kWh battery (45 kW for the smaller 32-kWh one), with a 10-80% state of charge reached in 37 minutes. There’s also AC charging support up to 11 kW, with a full charge taking 5.5 hours.

The car being displayed at PACE 2025 has heavily tinted windows and is wrapped with a livery featuring Carpy the capybara, the rodent ambassador for the Atto 2. Equipment that we can make out include 17-inch wheels and an ADAS suite, both of which are cost options in China.

Other features are LED exterior lighting and the ability to unlock the car using a NFC-enabled smartphone (sensor is on the side mirror) Expect the interior to come with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a rotating infotainment touchscreen measuring at least 10.1 inches (a 12.8-inch option is for higher trims in China).
