All MBPJ ‘sewa khas’ reserved parking bays for businesses will be valid for 24 hours next year

All MBPJ ‘sewa khas’ reserved parking bays for businesses will be valid for 24 hours next year

Petaling Jaya residents and workers, take note. Reserved parking bays in front of businesses will be valid for 24 hours next year. Currently, these ‘sewa khas’ lots are free game after 6.30 pm as well as on weekends and public holidays.

This was announced by mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon at a special meeting for MBPJ’s Budget 2026 yesterday. He said that 1,000 reserved parking bays would be converted and an additional 54 existing ‘blue line’ bays would be repainted red, reported by The Star.

Currently, parking lots that are painted with blue lines are 24-hour spaces, but that will soon be phased out – all reserved bays will be 24 hours and painted in red. The mayor said that there will be 1,054 reserved parking bays designated for 24-hour use in MBPJ’s jurisdiction, and the bays will be rented out at RM400 a month.

What do you think of this move by MBPJ? Non-business owners are likely to view this negatively, as street parking is already very limited in popular commercial areas, but shop owners and tenants that open after office hours – such as F&B establishments – might welcome the plan.

  • How about illegal ‘blocking’ of parking bays by business owners, especially in PJS11, near Sunway University…so many of them do that…no enforcement

  • As a middle-aged adult, I’ve increasingly avoided restaurants and businesses due to parking frustrations. I suspect many others share this sentiment.

  • This is ridiculous. If MBPJ wants to increase revenue, then it should be leased out at higher prices, say RM2k per month. RM400 for 24 hours usage for a business … is almost nothing. It will create further parking shortages in already congested places, e.g. Damansara Uptown

Daft suggestion. Or is it they have to give their crony private parking collection company some way to cari makan at all hours of the night? Baru crunch the maths issit? 40% of the whole isn’t that much after all right? The usual nonsense, agree to enriching some crony at the expense of legitimate government revenue.

Following the announcement, the impact of dishonest business owners marking parking bays as reserved will worsen. It used to affect parking during business hours, now it’s 24 hours.

This is dumb and funny. Good, business owners want to have less parking bays with access to their premises. It means they want less customers. And for some reason, they want these bays to be off-limits even after business hours so that 24-hour eateries won’t have parking spaces for their customers either.

This type of business-hostile policies are already par for the course of this current government so it’s not a surprise that the state government is also replicating anti-business measures.

  • Does it make any difference to enforce 24-hour? They are occupying it 24 hours all this while.
