Putrajaya Corporation will not proceed with Automated Rail Transit (ART) due to costs – PM’s department

Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) will not proceed with the proposed trackless tram, or Automated Rail Transit (ART) system in Putrajaya, as implementation costs are deemed to be too high, reported Bernama.

Preliminary studies have found that the estimated cost of implementing the Automated Rail Transit system, including infrastructure development, systems, operations and maintenance would reach RM211.95 million over a period of 10 years, said deputy minister in the prime minister’s department (federal territories) Datuk Lo Su Fui.

This cost is beyond the financial capacity of Perbadanan Putrajaya (PPj) as the local authority. On this basis, PPj will not proceed with the ART implementation in Putrajaya, and there are no plans to expand the line in the next phase,” Lo said.

However, PPj remains open to considering public transport planning needs in the future. This is subject to financial capacity and allocation approvals, in particular to achieve the target of 70% public transport usage, Lo added.

The ART trackless tram system was trialled in the administrative capital from May to July 2024, and was run as a pilot project by Putrajaya Corporation to complement the current transport network. The tram accommodated up to 307 passengers at a time, and was capable of a top speed of 70 km/h.

    Lets get real. Putrajaya is not dense and populated enough to have a railway or tram system. It will only become benificial if there is a huge event or celebration like annual Hari Kebangsaan.

    Meanwhile Sarawak proceeding with ART. Simply put Abang jo can manage his Gomen finances better than PMX. Just fire him and his incompetent & corrupted PH Gomen and replace with Sarawak Gomen and Abang Jo as PMX1. Do it now before our country is the only in Asean to go into recession soon.

      Meanwhile, it’s actually the federal govt, not the Sarawak state govt, which is bearing the cost of SARA/STR, BUDI95 & other similar programmes, which are to help lighten the cost of living burden for citizens nationwide (including Sarawak). Thus, it would be better if that RM 211.95 million can be reused to further help relieve the cost of living burden for the nation’s citizens.

      sarawak can do ART because its powered by hydrogen which they have abundance of due to renewable hydropower. peninsula dont have that .

    the fact that this was considered in the first place still mind boggles me. just buy buses and call it a day. if a simpler solution exists, then use it. don’t complicate things where it’s not necessary

    Putrajaya was dssigned with a monorail network in plan, and some components of the monorail network was already built 20 years ago (including a monorail bridge). Maybe its time to relook and see whether the monorail could be revived.

  • Putrajaya can use Volvo or MAN articulated buses. But what is the use if we wait a long time for buses and suddenly 3 or 4 articulated buses comes at the same time? This is a recurring problem in KL rapid buses and for many years still. Cannot solve the issue. It mirrors the image of rapid management and the bad discipline and work attitude of bus drivers. Please select more educated drivers who understand long waiting periods of commuters at bus stops.
