LRT Kelana Jaya line disruptions due to ageing trains; new train sets expected within two years – Loke

The recent service disruptions that plagued the LRT Kelana Jaya line were due to ageing trains which need to be replaced, transport minister Anthony Loke told the Dewan Rakyat, New Straits Times reported.

The transport ministry has started procurement of new train sets, and most of the new train sets are expected to arrive within the next two years, according to the transport minister.

“I want to assure the public that the Transport Ministry will always prioritise passenger comfort and convenience,” Loke said in response to Halimah Ali (PN–Kapar), who asked why disruptions on the Kelana Jaya line occurred frequently.

“Although we face financial constraints, maintenance has not been compromised. No cuts have been made to upkeep. For upcoming projects, we will consider the overall cost scope — not only the purchase of train sets but also long-term service agreements,” Loke said, dismissing claims that maintenance budgets had been cut.

The transport minister stated that many international operators include maintenance in their long-term contracts. In the past, there were no long-term service agreements. “We now plan to negotiate with the original equipment manufacturer so that when new train sets are supplied, they also provide long-term service agreements. This will ensure a more comprehensive maintenance system,” Loke said.
