The recent service disruptions that plagued the LRT Kelana Jaya line were due to ageing trains which need to be replaced, transport minister Anthony Loke told the Dewan Rakyat, New Straits Times reported.
The transport ministry has started procurement of new train sets, and most of the new train sets are expected to arrive within the next two years, according to the transport minister.
“I want to assure the public that the Transport Ministry will always prioritise passenger comfort and convenience,” Loke said in response to Halimah Ali (PN–Kapar), who asked why disruptions on the Kelana Jaya line occurred frequently.
“Although we face financial constraints, maintenance has not been compromised. No cuts have been made to upkeep. For upcoming projects, we will consider the overall cost scope — not only the purchase of train sets but also long-term service agreements,” Loke said, dismissing claims that maintenance budgets had been cut.
The transport minister stated that many international operators include maintenance in their long-term contracts. In the past, there were no long-term service agreements. “We now plan to negotiate with the original equipment manufacturer so that when new train sets are supplied, they also provide long-term service agreements. This will ensure a more comprehensive maintenance system,” Loke said.

I hope the YB is aware that the global standard for operating age for urban trains is 20 years, and with a major overhaul at 15 years, an additional 5 years can be added to the 20 years.
It is amazing that in Malaysia Prasarana is already looking at new trains for the MRT, which began operations only 10 years ago.
It should also be noted that Turkiye also buys used urban trains that have been refurbished for Istanbul, which has a life span of 10 years. These are deployed at the less strenuous routes of the line. Istanbul also operates a fixed rate fare system for each ride. If the fare is TL5.00, the rider can ride as many stations, and only pay more if they change to another line.
so that cronies can earn every time buy new trains, same as how shah alam stadium which was only 30 years old was demolished to build new stadium, while football stadiums in europe are still being maintained and used even after 80 years.
Precisely. Go to Munich and see that they are running train sets from the 1970’s. Good proactive maintenance culture…something that is lacking in Malaysia. Initial investment and subsequent maintenance in the train set has born fruit for more than half a century. Not to mention skills learned and retained in MRO operations.
Also, there is no way in the world to budget for money walking out the door in people’s pockets.
You cannot differentiate between LRT and MRT. The problem is the ageing LRT. Read full statement first before try to be a genius
I am showing the lack of capability in Prasarana, specifically Rapid Rail. The MRT was launched in 2016 and are already planning a new train set for purchase. Ridiculous.
Fire Loke and all transportation problems will be solved.
He represents the shareholder of Prasarana & the shareholder can’t be fired.
Why didn’t think of this 2 years ago? Might have new trains now, disruptions kept minimal. Who’s checking the condition of these trains?
malaysia will no longer be able to afford new trains because their main source of income petronas was sabotaged , sorry i mean “sued” –
The legal challenges initiated by Sarawak against PETRONAS regarding control over the continental shelf and natural resources represent a significant shift in Malaysia’s oil and gas landscape. The core issue is whether Sarawak can enforce its 2016 Distribution of Gas Ordinance (DGO) to control its oil and gas, or if PETRONAS retains exclusive rights under the federal Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA 1974)
we should consider create the ecosystem inview the country expanding their rail network. MRO is one of it, but new build equally important. Building train for sure more complicated especially driverless rolling stock.
Try telling this to our company bosses who wants proof or dock our pay when we arrive late to work. Driving is not am option either. How did all this go downhill so fast ??
This is what you call ‘short sighted’, there’s no resiliency.
Maintenance… nah… they have the mindset of build once, last FORVER!
