The Malaysian government will implement a special programme for military retirees and veterans to obtain a Class E license in order to operate heavy vehicles, Bernama has reported.
The initiative was considered necessary to address the shortage of heavy vehicle drivers in the haulage and logistics industry, said transport minister Anthony Loke.
“For that, [the government] will match the retired drivers who are skilled in driving and have a military (heavy vehicle) licence to convert directly to an E license. Through the recent National Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council meeting, we agreed to provide them with a (special programme) license,” Loke said.
The transport minister called upon all logistics companies to cooperate in providing job opportunities in the future for armed forces’ retirees, and he said that he is certain that “many companies will be interested because former soldiers are certainly disciplined, tough and can drive,” adding that the JPJ has a programme with the Armed Forces Veterans Affairs Corporation (Perhebat).

veterans have already cost the country tens of billions through LCS warships scandal and other assorted LTAT-related financial lossess . enough is enough . time to disband this corrupt organization
Those who are being investigated for the LTAT related scandals were holding positions in LTAT’s top management, and are not the lower ranking military retirees & veterans. LTAT is now under different management & should not be disbanded or dissolved because it is vital in looking after the affairs & welfare of the retired armed forces veterans who have served the nation.
Sounds like the commentor doesnt understand the issue. Low-ranked officers doesnt involved with the scandal.
Another thing is, for Malaysian, stop labelling the lorry/truck as “pilot darat”. In collective, they are still terrible drivers. Stop labelling things!!!!
Good options for our veterans. Can be mutually beneficial. Make good use of it and form a professional drivers body that helps make our logistics moving and keep to safety standards expectations.. look up to Petronas, shell and other oil. Company drivers…
To paraphrase the legendary Ling Liong Sik regarding the high rate of heavy vehicle accidents and deaths, “Mereka mahu mati, apa boleh kita buat?”If they drive with a death wish with no regard for the safety of other road users, no amount of licensing, restrictions, etc will ever reduce the fatality rate. They will just find other ways to kill themselves and other road users.
LingLS was right with that statement. no amount of law or regulation can reduce road accidents if people continue to have this ‘fearless’ driving attitude. Minister nor PM can change that. only the rakyat that work in this profession can do something about it.
Hence i suggest, for those law abiding and responsible driver they should form a body to register and maintain registry of their kind. use this registry to gain good negotiation with truck owners. Get better working terms and make the owner maintain the vehicle up to certain standard. being an association of good background and being reliable, there will be opportunity for employment when government going strict on enforcement.
