Owners of Malaysian vehicles have been advised to fill their cars up before entering Brunei, as the country has begun requiring all inbound foreign vehicles to have at least three-quarters of a tank of fuel. Failure to adhere to the new ruling, which came into effect yesterday, April 1, will see vehicles being barred from entering the country, the Borneo Post reports.
“All foreign-registered vehicles entering Brunei Darussalam will be required to maintain a minimum fuel level of three-quarter tank upon entry. Foreign vehicles that do not comply with this requirement will not be allowed to enter Brunei Darussalam,” the country’s Department of Energy (DOE) said in a statement.
Official government vehicles are exempted from this requirement, and the rule does not apply to Brunei-registered vehicles returning from Malaysia on their first entry, but it will be enforced for second and subsequent entries within a 24-hour period.
The DOE said that foreign vehicles in Brunei will only be allowed to purchase Shell V-Power Gasoline, which is currently priced at BND1.33 a litre (RM4.19), or Shell V-Power Diesel (BND1.99, or RM6.26) at participating petrol stations at prevailing market rates. Comparatively, Shell Premium is priced at BND0.53 a litre (RM1.67), Shell Regular is BND0.36 (RM1.13), and Shell Diesel is BND0.31 (RM0.98).
The department added that it has also instructed all fuel station operators to strictly follow verification procedures to prevent abuse. “Action will be taken for any attempts to use false or modified registration plates. Monitoring and enforcement will be actively carried out by the relevant authorities,” it said.
The department said the move is aimed at safeguarding the nation’s petroleum supply amid ongoing geopolitical developments in the Middle East.
